After our success at the 2003 Australian International Beer Awards, our brewmaster, Mr. Nakanishi, set his sights on creating a beer that would exceed the successes of our Pale Ale. The result was Brown Ale. By using the ideal combination of four different kinds of hops Wonderfully layered, Brown Ale has a delightfully broad range of aromas and flavors that compared with Pale Ale, is slightly more complex and richer. This complex yet smooth ale is a testament to Ise Kadoya’s continuous efforts to creating a better beer.

Speckled crimson. Mountainous white foam deposits pasty lace throughout the glass. Hugely airy and spicy phenolic aromas leap from the glass along with finespun juniper, cocoa, chicory, cookie, and toffee-glazed nuts. Lustrously estery with fresh peach and assorted berry notes. Exuberant carbonation. Bottle-conditioned. Initially dry and phenolic with a soft and silky push of dextrin-filled malt boasting lightly honeyed biscuit and sweet pecan suggestions. Tickle of bacteria-derived acid is enveloped by the sweetish malt and dry edge of smoke-tinged roast. Ample estery succulence as well as malt heft, yet more than enough clean malt depth to fill in the gaps left by the impeccably clean attenuation. Closes spicy and dry with plasticlike phenols exuding alongside pineapple upside-down cake, candied pecan, papaya, spruce tips and hazelnut. Another fun and well-made beer from Ise Kadoya. Of the five beers I’ve come across from this brewery, all have been infected…in a cool and interesting way, mind you. That said, I’d love to try these fresh because these beers are extremely clean and elegant, and, when infected, the phenols tend to take center stage and overshadow some of the finer details.

Bottle: Cloudy brown with a tall beige head. Caramel, wood aroma. Taste is earthy, light caramel, slightly tangy nut. Herbal and earthy, root-like hops... Odd, but interesting.

Draught at Ise Okage Yokocho. Dark amber, medium head. Aromas of yeast and caramel. Lovely texture- medium body and perfect carbonation. Sweetness came out as it warmed- stone fruit, dark sugar and a pleasing bitter finish. Excellent.

Good easy drinking Brown ale. Well balanced and not too bitter, but has little to excite.

Hazy chesnut brown beer. Frothy off white head. Light frothy palate with a little carbonated nip. Trace of apple leads to mild toffee malt. Finishes dry and crisp with a little hop bitterness. Needs something more!

500ml bottle pours a murky brownish color with a huge off-white head that retains well and leaves a healthy lacing on the glass. Aroma is light toasted grains with a citrusy and earthy hop presence. Taste is citrus and earthy hop bitterness that lingers a while with some light caramel malt and fruity sweetness underneath. Body is a little on the thin side for the style and carbonation is more than adequate. A well done and unique tasting brew that just needs a fuller body to it.
