COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This beer is based on Ise Kadoya’s award-winnning Pale Ale recipe, taken to another level by adding "arare" roasted brown rice to create a truly innovative and thoroughly Japanse-style beer. The resulting "genmai" flavored ale gives a refreshingly crisp hoppy flavor and a bitter finish. This recipe even made some Japanese microbrewers stand up and take notice, a true rarity in Japan.

Bottle. Head is initially average sized, frothy, white, mostly lasting. Body is hazy light to medium amber. Aroma is moderately malty (toasted grain/cereal), lightly to moderately yeasty (horseblanket, barnyard), with notes of unripe peach, kumquat, gum, band-aid. Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, lightly to moderately bitter. Medium body, watery/velvety texture, lively carbonation, lightly alcoholic. Have had this many times both at bars and at home, just getting around to rating it finally. Fun and wild beer with some Orval-ish notes and neat fruit character. The toasty rice aroma is distinct but blends well with the other components.

16.9oz bottle, shared with my cousin Daniel. Was on close-out at The Party Source for $2. Clear orange color. Pours with a big white head, that leaves good lace. Some fruity hop nose (pear, tropical fruit - mango, citrus) and definite rice aroma in the nose. Kind of sweet, like rice pudding or sake cask, with a hint of wood.. Very interesting aroma. Medium body, stronger carbonation, a soft smooth texture. Dry. Taste is light bitter, some sweet. Little savory, not as interesting as the nose. Interesting, though just decent-tasting ale, in the end. After the initial surprise from the unique flavor, I quickly lost interest. No staying power.

16.9oz bottle - pours murky orange with plenty of offwhite head and great lacing. Nose is straight up yeast like a Saison. Flavor adds sake-like qualities and a generic malt backbone. taste is dominated by the yeast flavor and I can’t make out sweetness or bitterness, but if I had to, I would go with light bitterness. light alcoholic bite. in a word: yeast.

Bottle was a gusher. Pours a opaque rusty orange with long lasting foamy off-white head. Barnyard, manure, bread, pepper, lemon, tangerine. Moderately bitter and sweet. Body is carbonated and crisp. More farmhouse ale than pale ale.

Hazy amber color with frothy ivory head. Dry brown rice, nutty, earthy hop, barnyard dung aromas. Medium body. Dry hay, roasted nut, grainy brown rice malty flavors--different

Bottle. Poured clear amber color with an average to large white frothy head that mostly lated with good lacing. Moderate toasted grainy and floral hop aroma. Medium body with a dry smooth texture and soft carbonation. Medium bittersweet flavor with a medium bittersweet finish of moderate duration. Soft drinkable brew.

Pours gold with a white head. Smells of spice, floral, some perfumy hints. Tastes floral with some dryness to it. Decent.

Draught in Beer Cafe Hopman, Chigasaki care of Tim Maloney. Colour is a really nice reddish brown with a decent white foam head. Nose has some citrous hop notes but also bit of toastey roasted grain. Taste is very toasty rice and grain. Very light bodied with a bit of ctrous hop at the end but mainly all about the toasted rice and grain character. Very nice.

A very funky brew. Pours burnt golden orange with a big head. Aroma of heavy grassy hops, a tinge of something unpleasant, not sure how to describe it. A bitter, slightly sour taste, reminiscent of brown rice. This particular bottle was not stored under best conditions, but this is still a very, very unique/funky beer. An interesting try, but I would not buy again.

Aroma is of tropical fruit and has a funkiness to it, somewhat similar to a sake-aged ale. The appearance is amber and noticeably carbonated. The flavor is of tropical fruit, orange and a different kind of maltiness, I’m guessing from the rice. Quite different in flavor, probably due to the rice, pretty good overall.
