Island Brewing Company presents the Blackbird Porter, a celebration of man and grain, bird and sky. Like the Brewer’s Blackbird (Euphagus cyanocephalus), Island Brewing Company’s Blackbird Porter is best seen in full sunlight, where the dark, roasted Chocolate and Crystal malts in the grain bill just barely let the light through. With 40IBU’s of Cascade and Magnum hops, the flavor is intricate, gregarious, one that skitters, darts and then proceeds into strong, direct flight over the palate.

Pours a thick brown color with a thick tan head.Fades gradually to a ring that stays on top for a decent amount of time. Smells of roasted malts, chocolate and coffee. Bold malt introduction. Roasted coffee and hoppy lacing comes through on the palate. Warms and finishes with a mild chocolate flavor. Traditional style Porter. Smooth and bold. Definitely well done for this style.

Island Brewing Blackbird Porter 5/6/12 notes: draft, brewery. Pour is dark, near-black, white small head. Aroma has roasts and charred, dark chocolate. Mouthfeel a bit weighty for porter, carbonation soft and pillowy. Flavor has forward roast notes, then some nutty malts and a good taught semi-dry bittersweet finish.

On draft from the brewery. This was roasty with hints of coffee toffee and finished with a nice subtle sweetness.

Pours a dark brown color with a creamy khaki head. Roasted malt, coffee, toasted nuts, and a light toffee sweetness. Some toasted bread, a light burnt note, and a hint of earthiness. The flavor has a bit of a burnt nut thing going on. Roasted malt, a bit of coffee and chocolate, and some earthy hops. Sort of watery with a light toffee sweetness.

Bottle from the source. Pours with a near black body and a tan head that fades to a ring in 25 seconds. Aroma of chocolate, milk chocolate, unfermented wort, oat meal cookies, vegetables, cinnamon, leather and smoke. Flavors of iodine, roast, chocolate, nougat, smoke. Very thin and watery. Light leather. Roasty, vanilla, nutty, very bland flavors. Coffee and mocha detectable. Light bubbles.
