COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The days are shorter, the nights are colder, the stars are brighter, and the beers are bolder. Island’s Brewing Company Brewmaster Paul Wright took an abundance of roasted grains to brew a foreign style stout that sustains complex malt flavors, a prominent roasted malt finish and just enough hop bitterness to balance the big and bold flavors within this limited release edition. Enjoy the hints of chocolate, the smoky essence, as well as the bracing effects and count yourself among the privileged few.

2009 Limited Release bottle picked up in Santa Barbara. Pours with a black body and a brown head that fades before it arrives. Somewhat glass coating. Aroma of brown sugar, baked biscuits, chocolate, cinnamon, cocoa powder, vanilla beans, pretty rich smelling. Flavors are not so good. Light infection. Vinous, dark fruits, bitter cocoa, lactic sourness, metallic. Light bubbles, watery, infection (once again!).

UPDATED: MAR 29, 2010 2009 Bomber from BevMo Salinas. Nose of coffee, chocolate, and a slight sourness; must be slightly infected. Black with a small cinnamon tan head. Flavor is chocolate, coffee, pepperiness, and a slight hint of off sourness; not too bad of an infection. 5/4/6/2/11/ 2.8 A fresh bomber of 2009 from the brewpub! Much better! Nose of strong roasted coffee and chocolate. Clear black with cherry edges and a small cinnamon colored head. Flavor is coffee and more coffee, light bitterness over a hint of chocolate. Very good this bottle.

22oz bottle, 2007 release. Black with a small brown head that leaves a ring around the glass. The aroma is pretty roasty with coffee, dust, and wet earth. Tasted clean on the first sip or two, but then a chalky, ashy element became noticeable, combined with a bitter coffee acidity. The body feels robust, yet also a little water, with a chalky drying in the mouth in the finish. The flavors really didn’t do it for me and I hope I’m more impressed with their other offerings.

Nitrogen draft at brewery, consumed 02/18/08. Beer is almost black with a fine tan head. Aroma is a little roasty. Despite nitro, mouthfeel is watery. Mineral water flavor is odd, like beer was brewed with Perrier. Mocha and chocolate fight with the minerals in a struggle for flavor dominance that leaves your palate the loser. Disappointing.

22 oz bottle, 2006/2007 vintage, via BA solomon420. Pours an opaque very dark brown, almost black, colored body under a foamy one finger dark brown head. Lots of thick lacing left. The aroma is very roasty and chocolaty without seeming burnt. Some light lactose and hoppiness, and a touch of coffee. The flavor has some major hard edges. Very astringent with an overly roasted burnt malt dominated flavor. Finishes with a light lactic sour note and a lingering mixture of chalkiness, moderate alcohol, and a disturbing saltiness. Mouthfeel is medium bodied, fairly watery in texture, with a shade too much fizzy carbonation. Overall, this was just a little too much effort to drink the whole bottle. I don’t think it was infected, but it surely wasn’t good.

Thanks to Kramer17801 for this as part of Mystery Swap 2.0. Onyx pour with 1-finger brown head. Aroma of dark malt, dark fruit, figs, and some lactic and cherry notes. The flavor was very lactic, with a lot of acidic and cherry notes, some roasty malt, molasses, and slight nut hints. Got more tart as it warmed. I’d love to get another of these and rerate some day.

Pours with a black body topped by a thick head with a good amount of lacing. The aroma is farely good with a slight sweetness and note of bitter roastiness. The flavor is slightly sweet yet bitter with notes of malt and a smokey/roasty note as well as a creamy acidic note. Definately infected as was other bottles I’ve had from them. I can see their potential, but until I have a bottle that isn’t infected they will continue to get the ratings they do from me.

Pours a black color with a small head and just a little bit of lacing. Aroma is like mild chocolate and a hint of caramel. Flavor is almost acidic and milky- definitely not a pleasant combination. I’m pretty sure this bottle was infected which would make this another infected beer from them. I’m super disappointed but will say that the bottle is very cool looking!
