3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Poured from a 500 mL bottle into a plastic cup on the ferry to Islay. Bottle conditioned version. Pours opaque dark copper-brown. Sweet malts (pale and crystal) and barley on the nose. Flavour is layered dark malts and spicy hops (Goldings, Mount Hood, Fuggles). This was the "Champion Scottish Beer of Britain 2009" and I can see why.

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 11/20
UPDATED: JUL 24, 2013 Bottle at the GJBF 2013 Osaka. A dark maroon color, nice looking. Some smokiness but a two-dimensional beer which is a bit rough. Not bad, an ok bitter. A bottle at home from rakuten, slightly sour, rough taste, it seems to have gone off...the color is still great and so is the body/head but it seems somewhat oxidized or something. Definitely the worse for wear. In this condition I’d give it a 2.5...

1.8 AROMA 1/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 5/20
Bottle at home. It pours clear amber with a thick off-white head. The smell is old sulphurous fart....manure and earth. The taste is earth, wood, leather, varnish, pepper and a touch of citrus, with a dry, bitter finish. Medium body and moderate carbonation. Probably past its prime. Tastes ok, but smells pretty damn nasty. Will re-try if the opportunity presents itself.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Poured with care as this is bottle conditioned resulted in a clear bark amber ale with a head of cream white that lasted with nice lacing so it all looks good. Taste is initially somewhat sweet, fruity then a clean dry bitter with hops. Rather fine.

2.8 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
50cl bottle. Pours a dark, slightly hazy with a nicely proportioned head. The nose has a slightly sweaty, perhaps herby, aroma. The taste has metallic flavours with a herby finish. The palate is light to medium in body with a really drying mouthfeel which continues through the long finish. Overall, the palate is actually fairly substantial and long but is it pleasant - I would say, not that pleasant.
