COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Cask; Regular. Also available bottle conditioned.
A dark, dry stout brewed using pale, crystal, chocolate and wheat malts together with un-malted roasted barley. Golding and Bramling Cross hops are used for the bittering, giving a fruity edge to the dry bitterness that comes from using highly roasted malts. Late additions of Bramling Cross hops to the boil add another dimension to the aroma of the beer.

50 cl bottle.
Pours pitch black color with a small beige head. Aroma of dry chocolate, roasted malts, caramel notes, some cocoa and subtle coffee notes. Flavor of mild chocolate, dark fruity notes and some malts. Very watery and thin, and that’s all it takes to bring the score down. A big disappointment.

Bottled. Nutty, roasty nose with soy, chocolate, light berry fruit, smoke. Black with a tan, lacy head. Dry minerally flavor, very little sweetness, light wheat. Bitter, dry, finish. Very interesting. Nose and taste quite different.

Scopey (3253) - Croydon, Greater London, ENGLAND - APR 5, 2013
Bottle on the Calmac ferry to Islay. It pours black with a thick beige head. The nose is roasted malt, ash, earth, coffee grinds and a hint of smoke in the background. The taste is roasted malt, well-done toast, earth, pepper, liquorice, cola, tar and a tour of sourness with a crisp, dry finish. Medium body and moderate carbonation. Robust and well balanced. Islay Ales best beer most probably.

500ml bottle, on Islay May 2012. Black with, thin brown head. Dry roasted aroma with, chocolate and fruits. Little coffee, hops and roasted malt on taste. Too light body and too much carbonation. Easy drinkable.

Bottle. Black with a solid tan head. Aroma is a bit thin. Flavour is where it’s at, whisky peat with a dry roast malt. Finish is a little ash on a dry roast.

Bottle from Spar in Port Ellen. Pours a very dark brown colour with a lacy tan head. Aroma of chocolate, Weetabix malt and caramel. Similar flavours with mild carbonation, light CO2 prickle and a foamy mouth-feel. Quite bitter also. OK.

Dark Brown almost black with a tan thick lasting frothy head. Smells of deep roast. malt, chocolate and sugar. Frothy thin body. Sweet chocolate start with strong roasted malt, ash, and coffee and a dry chocolate finish. A bit bitter on the finish. A great beer and a cracking stout.

500ml bottle from Ales by Mail. Looks good on the pour: a deep, near opaque burgundy colour with an initially large & rocky but slowly disappearing light tan head. Goes downhill from there on in. I don’t think it’s in top form. Cherry & dark berries to the fore on the nose. More cherry & raspberry coming through on the tongue with touches of liquorice & minor roasty, coffee malt tones. Light to medium body, soft to medium carbonation finishing with a short & relatively soft bitterness though the tanginess lingers on. Although I suspect it’s infected or along those lines it’s not undrinkable & drinks somewhat like a muted sour.
