3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 sm89walt (1419) - Norwich, Norfolk, ENGLAND - MAR 16, 2012
500ml bottle from Ales by Mail. Looks good on the pour: a deep, near opaque burgundy colour with an initially large & rocky but slowly disappearing light tan head. Goes downhill from there on in. I don’t think it’s in top form. Cherry & dark berries to the fore on the nose. More cherry & raspberry coming through on the tongue with touches of liquorice & minor roasty, coffee malt tones. Light to medium body, soft to medium carbonation finishing with a short & relatively soft bitterness though the tanginess lingers on. Although I suspect it’s infected or along those lines it’s not undrinkable & drinks somewhat like a muted sour.

Bottle from Bruichladdich mini-market. Looks black and thick, a little like motor oil. This light brown head. Almost like a cask real ale. Roasty and strong flavoured stout with a bitter finish Some chocolate and coffee. A bit light palate after seeing how thick it looked pouring. Some smokiness maybe too. This is art.

[cask at the 2010 Scottish Real Ale Festival, Edinburgh] Dark, roasty stout with a really nice bitter finish complimented by some initial sweetness. Very black pour with a thin tan head, aromas of chocolate, toast and some sweetness. Quite thin on the palate compared to other stouts, but the flavours are right up there – roasted coffee, chocolate, a touch of fruit. I also got some smoky characters, but wasn’t sure if that was because I knew I was drinking something from Islay! [27062010]
