tombyars (1102) - Saltcoats, SCOTLAND - FEB 1, 2012
Tasted this in the Saltcot, Saltcoats (JDW) in July 2001. Cask, handpump dispense. Clear pale straw in colour with a thin white head. Slight hint of caramel in the short aroma. Thin but creamy mouthfeel and good lacing. Pale malts give a digestive biscuit base with sweet toffee notes running through it, almost like a Caley 80/. Dusty hop resins give a sharp citric note to the aftertaste. Malt returns in the fruity finish with marmalade and barley sugar flavours in the mouth. An excellent Scottish ESB and worth finding.

Cask at the Moorings, Aberdeen. It pours golden yellow, with a thin foamy white head. The nose is sweet sultana, raisin, marmalade and Braeburn apple. The taste is hay, straw, citrus pith, honey sweetness and marmalade, with a decent bitter finish. Medium body and soft carbonation. Ok.

50cl bottle, thanks to Lewis. Pours hazy golden-orange with a thin white layer of lace. The nose has sultana and maybe oranges against a gently malty background. The taste has more oranges, with something earthy kicking in at the end. The palate has a big beginning then falls away in the middle section. The finish is bitter and quite long. Overall, a decent bitter.

Cask at the Amesbury Ale House. Freshly tapped cask pours a clear orange with no head whatsoever. Tart apple aromas. Thin with sour apple from front to back. Taste in this cask leans more to cider than an ESB.

Cask. Pale amber with white head. Aroma of spicy, citrus rind hops, a suggestion of rich toffee malt. Typical cask palate; smooth, low carbonation. Balance of flavours towards bitter, with hops quite grassy on the finish. Not bad.
