Hazy amber colour. A bit of berryish hop on the nose and lots of chewy, earthy malts. Body is a bit flat. Palate dominated by chewy malts and whispers of hop resin. That, to me, is balance out of whack and flavours not favourable to my mouth.

Buttery nose with some light bread and yeast notes. Soapy and spicy with a good, solid body. Tart peaches and tangerines are present, with a nutty butter flavor and a tangy old orange flavor. Interesting.

(Draft: 2005 Hopfest at Brouwers Café in Seattle, WA) The nose is surprising me as I’m expecting the typical IPA aroma. This is anything but! Lightly sweet, moderately hoppy (much less than expected), but lots of pale malt and extremely fruity, with orange citrus leading the way. Very balanced aromas for an IPA. The flavor is also well balanced. Tasty, grainy and gently toasty pale maltiness provides a strong base without being caramely, and doesn’t flinch with the potent hop punch, taking the punch and standing tall. Citrus hoppiness is very bitter and shows moderate grapefruit, especially in the finish. Golden color is somewhat hazy. Sizeable, off-white head maintains a thin, full layer, decorating the glass with swiss cheese lace. For a beer with grainy maltiness as the base, I’ve never tasted better. Way to go, Arlan, glad you are brewing quality beer in a new location. Proof that the brewer makes all the difference in the world.
