Cask at wetherspoons, Streatham Hill. Pours a dark amber colour with an off-white head. Aroma is toffee and a sweet maltiness . Light to medium body. A little sherry, toffee, toast, light citrus, a little metallic. Not great. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

(cask@The Sir John Oldcastle, London) Pours a dark amber colour with a minimal offwhite head. Weak malty toasted fruit in aroma, taste of bitter orange fruit malts and minimal hop character with bitter finish. Ok.

Cask at the John Russell Fox (JDW), Andover. Reddish chestnut with a dense cream head; sour fruity aroma; soft in the mouth with a fruity malt flavour and a dry, earthy, nutty, finish. A decent Christmas ale, but not a patch on the IPA served next to it.

[Polypin from the brewer’s own stall at the Winchester Farmer’s Market] Dark amber, negligible white head. Caramel and fruit up front with hints of chocolate and flowers and lots of twigs. But quite nice twigs actually - it’s reasonably well hopped and has a crisp, assertive earthy bitterness at the end. More autumnal than Christmassy, but a reasonable ESB nevertheless.

Cask at JDW in Feltham, pours a dark amber with a fine off-white head, not terribly aromatic but what there is is malty and faintly spicy, chewy body with notes of peach, burnt caramel and cloves. Roast fruitcake and bitter finish.

UPDATED: DEC 7, 2010 Cask at the Tyburn, JDW. Pours a clearish, amber-gold with a soft, off-white head. Toasted malts and ripe, lightly tart berries in the aroma. Somewhat of a rich flavor, with some sour malts, grapes, and orange peel. Light to medium in body with very soft carbonation. Finishes with mild warmth, faint citric bitters, some light dryness and light bread. Nothing special.
