Clear medium orange amber color with a average, frothy to creamy, good lacing, fully lasting, off-white head. Aroma is moderate malty, caramel, toffee, sugar, light hoppy, citrus. Flavor is moderate to light light heavy sweet and moderate bitter with a average to long duration, toffee, sugar, hop fruity. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft to flat. [20100429]

Cask. Deep golden/amber colour with a small off-white head. Aroma and flavour are both sweet malts, some grassy and mildly floral notes. Pleasant bitterness in the finish.

Cask (handpump) at Lord Moon of the Mall (JDW), Strand, London, January 2007. From a distance, Ithought this was a reappearance of Grand Union One Hop Saaz (which I missed first time round, so I was pleased to see it again - or so I thought). However, on closer examination, it transpired that this was an Itchen Valley beer, so I wondered whether that brewery had also adopted the "One Hop" format as a single-hopped Cascade beer had previously appeared. Or perhaps not - one of Itchen Valley’s flagship beers is Pure Gold, which uses both Cascade and Saaz, so maybe they are just trying it out without one, or other, of the hops. In fact, this was more amber than gold in colour, with a tight white head. The aroma, British style, was quite restrained with grassy touches, as one would expect from Saaz. Much more comes through on the palate. The initial impression is lemony citrus, but there’s a firm, dry malt background. A more spicy, earthy hop character emerges, nodding more towards a traditional British style than the hopping would suggest. Hints of tropical fruit come through late. Although the palate is fairly light, the juicy hop and fruit character prevents the mouthfeel becoming too watery. A mellow and easy drinking beer, but not short of presence and bite. NIcely done.
