4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Cask @ Olde Sun, St Neots. Black, opaque and fairly flat. Aroma of smoked malts and coal, with a fair alcoholic kick. Sweet, chocolatey and smooth taste, like a mid-strength milk stout. Although there is some bitterness at the finish, the profile isn’t complex and doesn’t need to be. Thin palette brings the score down only slightly. A good English cask strong stout like this is worth its weight in gold. Seek this out in a pub that knows how to keep beer.

3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
[Cask at Monk’s Retreat (JDW), Reading] Black with a lasting beige head. Light frothy mouthfeel at first, with light roasted notes and hints of licquorice and rubber. Feels more like a mild when drinking actually - quite refreshing. No sign of the alcohol. The flavours oddly develop several minutes after you’ve finished it - chocolate, and a good roasty ashiness with a slight bitterness. Very strange that it takes so long to make an impact. It definitely grew on me, a decent stout (with more than a hint of a mild), but there’s nothing remotely imperial about it, despite what the pump clip said.
