Pours a murky amber color, small off white head. Aroma of feint apples, hops, and sweet caramel malt. Flavor is sweet and hoppy, lots of, you guessed it, cascade hops. Very pleasent to drink. Thanks to JahNoth for this one.

04.16.05 Brewtopia ’05, draught. It’s a dark amber with sticky and tall head that made me think amber rather than IPA and I considered it as such off the bat. Sweet aromas and huge dose of pine. Tropical and a good malt punch (grainy sweetness) on nose, too. Flavor is way over hopped with no malt presence to balance the sharp and oily pine/orange rind/pineapple. Kind of thin bodied. I think it could use some work but it’s bold enough to be on its way to something very good.

Bottle - Crimson in color, sharp nose and strong hop presence. Overall if you like IPA, this is a good one with an slightly unusual color. Probably the best i’ve had from Ithaca.

On tap at Richmond’s in Rochester, New York. This IPA poured red, actually (advertised as a red ale). The aroma was strong cascade hops, very cirtusy. The taste had a strong hop kick. Considering the color, I was trying to find the malt backbone but was having difficulty. This beer was decent and the hoppiness was nice in the bar environment, but it was unbalanced.

UPDATED: APR 20, 2007 Orange-red body, small tan head, PNW hop nose. Hops are rather subdued in the flavor; creamy malt body, fairly sweet; finishes with medium bitterness and a hint of mintiness.

Fairly clear copper body, medium light cream head. Tangy, somewhat caramely aroma with piney, earthy hops. Toasty body, sweet, caramely, and a touch tangy, with a nice balance of earthy hops. Not too bitter; this is on the tangier, fruitier side of IPAs. Full mouthfeel and finish. As the beer warms the rather substantial malt bill really begins to shine with big caramels and dark fruit; my Munich sensor is beeping. Thanks Dan (jah noth) for the bottle!

UPDATED: JAN 1, 2005 Dark amber color, nearly no head. Aroma of citrus, mainly grapefruit, with some caramel malts in the background. Mildly sweet malts up front, with some citric hops following. Nicely balanced.

UPDATED: DEC 24, 2004 (12 oz bottle, obtained in trade with jah noth, thanks Dan!) I do not think this is living up to its billing as "monstrously hoppy". This is a moderately bitter IPA, but not even close to being over the top. But it is nicely balanced by a somewhat roasty maltiness which makes me question the classification of IPA. There seems to be a general sour character to the flavor, though its light enough to be tolerable. Fairly dry on the palate. For whatever reason, the nose is reminding me of the floral, spicy aroma of a Viognier, except that this beer’s aroma is a touch sour too. Dark amber in color. Small off-white head maintains a thick rim around the edge of the glass, and leaves sporadic oddly shaped patterns of lace. You know, with a name like Cascazilla, I guess I was expecting more out of this beer, so I’m a bit disappointed. It’s decent stuff, but just an average, routine beer to me.

Pours a deep amber with a lite bubbly, quickly dissipating head. Aroma of oxidized cascades and a fair amount of diacetyl. Oxidized flavors with a fair amount of orangy hop flavors. Huge amounts of diacetylw/ a med bittered finish. OK.

Pours a nice dark red/amber. The hops are evident in the smell, but not as evident as some dry hopped IPAs. The taste is full with crisp malt and nice floral hop aftertaste. Beer appears to have a nice body and perfect alcohol content for a session IPA. Ithaca’s best beer yet.
