3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Pours a dark chestnut brown color that appears nearly black and opaque in the glass with dark mahogany edges and a two finger beige head that slowly settles into a thick, lasting ring. Very good retention with rings and streaks of soapy lacing left behind.
Roasted dark malt aroma with very little hop character. Smells more like a porter at this point with robust, slightly smoked malt notes countered by a sweeter dessert-like character. Subtle grassy pine presence with a touch of floral buds and resinous oils but these hop/IPA characteristics are overpowered by the complex malt bill. Decent blend of roast and sweeter malts with hints of liquid smoke, burnt toast, coffee bean, oatmeal, dark chocolate, caramel and toffee. Smells decent but I would have preferred a stronger hop presence in the nose.
On the lighter end of medium body with a strong earthy hop presence giving off some dry, piney bitterness that lingers over the dark malt backbone into a bone dry finish. Resinous oils, dank buds, pine needle and spruce tip followed by hints of burnt toast, bittersweet dark chocolate, used coffee grounds, oatmeal, ash, caramel and toffee. Pretty robust but never approaches being acrid, harsh or overly roasted. Complex, well balanced and very easy to drink with a well masked ABV. No heat with very little alcohol sweetness in the finish. I’m not a big fan of black IPAs but this is one if the better interpretations of the style that I’ve had.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
[Bottle (12oz)] Pours a very dark brown with a large lasting frothy tan head and some lacing on the glass. Aroma of toasted malt, chocolate, floral hops, alcohol and some dark fruit. Flavour follows the aroma but is too boozy. Bitter alcoholic finish. Medium bodied. Just good, a bit of a mess to me.

3.2 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Black, dense lace.
Mediumto full body, intense flavor, smooth texture, pleasantly assertive alcohol heat, lingering palate.
Highly bitter but balanced by ample sweetness,
Flavor is predominantly roasty but also malty, not as hoppy as I expected.
Tastes just whatit's supposed to be.

1.8 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 1/5 OVERALL 5/20
On the cold weather Pgh tour of winter 2015 spring at bocktown robinson, part 2. Big and black. No head. Has a medium ips aroma. Wew, first taste is a big kick if IPA. Covers most all aspects of darkness. Yes, the black beer taste attributes are well hiddne. If you closed yoru eyes you’s never know this is a dark beer. Big heavily hopped kick in the face BS.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
I don’t know about you guys but when I see a nearly ten percent ABV black IPA my first thought isn’t, "Oh wow, I bet that is a great beer." This is kind of OK though so go ahead and try it if you think you might like it. My first thought was this was really just going to come off as an imperial stout of some sort but it really does come off as more of an IPA. It’s dark in color w/ a white head of fine bubbles. Hops are front in center w/ a bit of sweet orange peel and pine. You don’t get any dark grain character at all until you taste it and even then it’s very mild. This isn’t exactly dry as a bone but it’s minimally sweet for the gravity which helps keep the hops tasting bringht and clean rather than resinous and heavy. As it warms, some chocolatey notes come out and it takes on a bit of a fuller body. It finishes w/ firm bitterness and a lingering bit of semi-sweet chocolate. I figured this for a disaster but it’s actually pretty decent.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Two for two (so far) from brewer. Hard pressed to fault it is a porter/stout with restrained hoppiness that is enticingly almost perfect.
