On the cold weather Pgh tour of winter 2015 spring at bocktown robinson, part 2. Big and black. No head. Has a medium ips aroma. Wew, first taste is a big kick if IPA. Covers most all aspects of darkness. Yes, the black beer taste attributes are well hiddne. If you closed yoru eyes you’s never know this is a dark beer. Big heavily hopped kick in the face BS.

I don’t know about you guys but when I see a nearly ten percent ABV black IPA my first thought isn’t, "Oh wow, I bet that is a great beer." This is kind of OK though so go ahead and try it if you think you might like it. My first thought was this was really just going to come off as an imperial stout of some sort but it really does come off as more of an IPA. It’s dark in color w/ a white head of fine bubbles. Hops are front in center w/ a bit of sweet orange peel and pine. You don’t get any dark grain character at all until you taste it and even then it’s very mild. This isn’t exactly dry as a bone but it’s minimally sweet for the gravity which helps keep the hops tasting bringht and clean rather than resinous and heavy. As it warms, some chocolatey notes come out and it takes on a bit of a fuller body. It finishes w/ firm bitterness and a lingering bit of semi-sweet chocolate. I figured this for a disaster but it’s actually pretty decent.

Two for two (so far) from brewer. Hard pressed to fault it is a porter/stout with restrained hoppiness that is enticingly almost perfect.

Brune foncé. Fin collet brun. Ronde. Bonne amertume. Chocolaté. Note d’espresso. Malt grillé. Bien houblonné. Résineuse. Légèrement anisé. Finale sèche et sucre brulé. Très bien.

DATE TASTED: December 30, 2014... GLASSWARE: Maudite snifter... OCCASION: celebrating Shan’s new holiday--New Year’s Eve Eve... APPEARANCE: jet black body with gray uneven head that simmers to a marshy top; post-trailing is tangible... AROMA: extremely floral with vanilla, citrus and bubblegum; complex... PALATE: immediately effervescent, with bubbles coalescing on the tongue; warming, stoking at the throat; at 9.5% ABV, devilishly subtle...TASTE: intense hops blunt slightly sweet, almost milky hints; malts lend a smoky appeal to the chunky dark body; coffee is secondary, but smoothly infused... OVERALL: a BIG beer that requires sipping for appreciation; in the Box o’ Hops, a third to the Creeker and Flower Power, but that is not an insult, but that’s the company it keeps...

Pours a 1/2 finger, beige, creamy head. Color is dark brown. Black malts, earthy hops, faint root beer barrel candy, moist earth, light char, faint fudge and herbal notes in the nose. Medium body, creamy and a light fusel note in the finish. Tastes of black malts, herbal hops, some char, licorice and it's quite sprucy with leafy hops. Towers of lace the whole way around the glass. I'm mixed with this beer. Sometimes it tastes really good and other times it seams a little too earthy or something. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

12 ounce bottle. Pours a near black color with a large frothy tan head. Good head retention. Aroma of roasted malt and bright floral and tropical hops. The taste is roasted malts, green, tropical, candied citrus, citrus, floral hops and a bit of bubblegum. Medium bodied, mild lingering bitterness.

12oz bottle from Pace High Carryout. Brown pour with an off-white head. Aroma of floral, cocoa, sweet citrus, roasty. Tastes of citrus, bitter hops, light coffee/chocolate, orange, toffee, light floral. Less of the big burnt vibe typical with the bipa’s - which makes it easier drinking for me. Can’t believe it’s almost 10% abv - covers it completely. Feel like this is underrated.
