COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Made with 100% New York State hops. India Pale Ale (IPA) is a style of beer renowned for its hop character. Some modern brewers have taken this tradition to the next level with the "Double IPA". What better way to parade the potential of NYS hop farming than with our new Double IPA. Hop farming once thrived in New York State. In the early 1900s, 95% of all hops used in the US were grown here in New York. However, soon the combination of crop disease & prohibition put an end to local hop growing. There is a new movement afoot to bring commercial hops back to NY. The Ithaca Beer Co. has teamed up with Pederson Farms (Seneca Castle, NY) to bring you this exceptional ale.

On tap at Ithaca Beer Co. Pours a clear copper orange with a thin head that quickly faded to a ring. Pleasant aroma of oranges, grapefruit and pine. The flavor was again oranges, grapefruit and pine along with a bit of sweet malt. Some lingering bitterness at the finish. The alcohol was very well hidden with only a bit of warmth after the swallow. Medium bodied.

Notes: Pours an almost neon orange color body with a fluffy, but small, white head. Pretty nice lacing as well. Lots of bitter, bitter hops in there. An almost sweet, sugar, candy smell. Whiff of alcohol as well. Almost like a druid’s herbal concoction, chocked full of fruits, flowers and grass. Kind of takes your breath away on the first sip. Starts low and crescendos. Begins pretty smooth then rockets into bitter city. Kind of astringent end, but doesn’t last too long. This beer should probably be sipped. A little bit different than what I’m used to in Double IPAs, but very tasty nonetheless. An RBI double for Ithaca.

Pours a clear orange colour with a medium sized head with poor retention, but great lacing. The nose is of strong, slightly sour manderine orange and overly sweet malts. The flavour is as sweet and malty as it is hoppy. The hops are fruity and then piney and citrusy in the finish. Sticky sweet malt and sugar also accompany the hops in the finish. The hops seem a bit flat in the taste as they are overpowered by malty sweetness, sugar and alcohol. The hops are there, they just don’t pop like they should in a double IPA. I feel the flavour profile in this brew is more like a barleywine.

Bottle: Intense aroma upon opening of Hops and sweeeet malts. Heavy pour yeilds a fluffy head with swiss cheese sticky lacing. The deep golden color along with the intese aroma sings the siren song of "consume me now"! Medium body is surprisingly brief with light aftertaste ofyou guessed it...hops. Many thanks to the slob for asking me to hunt this critter down for him.

12 oz bottle via bmartin08 (thanks!). Pours a very hazy amber with a small beige nose is orange and pine with fusels. Taste starts out with some caramel, then some orange, pineapple, and piny hops. Aftertaste is bittersweet. Body is medium/full. Carbonation is medium. This is a well-done balanced east coast IIPA, not sure why it is rated so low...

Dark copper, clear but dense, small bubbles, slowly rising. Almost no head. Nose of oranges, hops, sweet malt, and alcohol. Taste more sequential than integrated and balanced. First impression is a huge slam of cascades, with great aromatics ... pine tar and oranges. Next impression is sweet malts, maybe sugar too, then overwhelmed with a slow alcohol burn. The finish is bitter, bitter hops. Dead flat in the mouth, and some real carbonation would have countered both the alcohol and the bitterness. This seemed to me more of an overhopped barleywine than a double IPA. Not especially interesting, which is surprising for my favorite style.

12 oz bottle from Secret Santa. Citrus orange peel and sweet malt on the nose. Orange body with off white head. Dry citrus vine and pine flavor to start with. As you get to the middle to finish beer has a thick sugar malt coating along with a good dose of sweetness. Maybe just little to sweet but still a good beer.
