(bottle - 750 ml) Dark black with a thin brown head. Aroma is lots of coffee with some very mild chocolate flavor. Smells like a cup of coffee. Flavor is a lot of roasted malts and coffee grounds with a light chocolate and caramel undertone. Some slightly nutty notes as well. Lingering bitter aftertaste. A bit thin, but I liked it.

In short: A cold cup of black coffee with bubbles. Thin. Boring.
How: Tap at Sunset Grill, Boston
The look: Very dark brown body topped by a little beige ring of foam
In long: Nose of a cold cup of black coffee. Taste is a cold cup of black coffee, bunt malts with nutty chocolaty fudge in the back. Body was very much on the thin side of felt a bit lifeless. Strong black coffee bitterness in the back. I can enjoy simple coffee stouts when they have body, roastiness and a roasted coffee beans flavour but this beer just tasted like a cold cup of black coffee. Very basic and bland. I was really bored at the end of my glass. Ill try it again because I usually like that brewery. Im working through my backlog, I had that beer on tap late july 2009 when it was just released. Maybe it needs a little time to develop and I had it too fresh, or to quote my girlfriend in bed: too soon ....

sample from the pitcher at GABF on 9/26/09... dark black with tan head... big coffee notes on the nose.... tons of coffee! thin body... more coffee on the finish... If you like coffee, youll most likely enjoy this... however it is a bit one dimensional.

Had this on tap at GABF. This is damn good. Pours black with a medium tan head and good lacing. Amazing aroma of coffee, roast, chocolate, and hints of dark fruit. Flavor is coffee and cream, vanilla, roasted malt, burnt notes, mild smoke, and berries. Finish is a bit dry yet palate is smooth. Just a bit watery for the style. Overall a great beer.

750ml bottle shared thanks to Josh. Poured a dark and deep brown color with an averaged sized off white head. Aromas of coffee, coffee grounds, roastiness, and chocolate. Tastes of coffee, chocolate, lactose, and some caramel.

Opaque black color with a small, tan head that left nice lacing on the glass. Aroma of coffee, smoked malts, roast, chocolate, and ash. Taste of coffee, roasted malts, smoke, vanilla, tobacco, and dark chocolate, with a dry, roasty finish. Thanks Josh!

GABF2009 - this was supposed to be a coffee-infused stout - man, thats one of my favorite styles, but this stuff was effing bad - ashy, smoky, tobacco, maple flavors - creamy mouthfeel, which I guess is the milk stout part - mostly ash and tobacco, though, like sucking on a liquefied cigar at times - they must have used some seriously crappy coffee in this - theyre lucky I like smoky character in a beer, otherwise this rating would have been even lower.

Pours a deep brown with a medium tan head. Aroma of coffee grinds, nuts, roasted malt, sweet milky notes. Flavor of sweet lactose notes, coffee, nuts, caramel, roasted malt and chocolate.

UPDATED: FEB 3, 2010 500th Stouties Rating. Draft. Talk about being against the grain, however this beer is dominated my my favorite adjunct to beer, coffee! Pours a black brune body with an off white head. Aroma is divine, overwhelming chilled just pulled out of the freezer and buried my face in the can coffee at its absolute freshest, reminds me of some serious breakfast stout on draft. Delicious fresh roast y coffee its all you taste, creamy coffee body and more coffee. Great.

750 ml bottle purchased at the brewery. The pour looks exactly like coca cola. Very dark brown with clear reddish brown edges and a large fizzy light brown head that completely deflated by the time I was ready for my second sip. Heavily carbonated. The aroma is loaded with coffee with a few notes of tobacco detected as well. The flavor is again coffee and not much else. Thankfully, the coffee flavor is fresh and bright and not excessively bitter. Im really not picking up any of the qualities that would make this a sweet stout. No lactose or milk sweetness and really not all that smooth. In fact, Id call this beer overcarbonated and the mouthfeel is prickly if anything, not smooth. Very late in the glass, as the carbonation eases, the beer is a bit smoother and less abrasive. This is probably not something Id look to revisit.
