Inspired by the rye beers of southern Germany, we created this mischievously potent brew using an intriguing combination of pale and rye malts, a traditional German ale yeast, and New Zealand hops. The result is an assertive dark copper-brown ale with a full-bodied malt backbone and elegant notes of clove and spice. The finish is bracing with a sharp spiciness that parallels a gentle hint of tropical fruit.

750 ml bottle that I think MacBoost sent to me as a bonus. Thanks! Or not, if I bought this locally. Pours a semi-cloudy amber-brown color with a beige head that settles quickly. Notes of rye, clove, and peppery spice, earth, caramel, earth, and muddled fruits. Medium-bodied, with medium carbonation and an earthy, spicy mouthfeel. Too muddled altogether. Lacks character. It isn’t bad, but it’s the one people seemed least interested in. Just doesn’t leave much of an impression, so it’s a strange choice for an anniversary release.

AirForceHops (4171) - Epping, New Hampshire, USA - MAY 20, 2014
750 ml bottle. Dark ruby color with a thin cap of white head, not much lace. Aroma is toffee, rye malt and a pleasant fruity essence.

Flavor begins with a fruity hops leading into a dusty rye malt and hints of dark fruit with maybe a hint of anise. Earthy tones in the backside. Medium body with a light watery texture. Really simple, kind of one dimensional overall.

(bottle - 750 ml) Dark brown pour with a thin tan head. Mild dry rye aroma with some malt sweetness and a very light hint of hops underneath. Flavor is a bit spicier. Can get hints of the clove but they disappear quickly under the rye dryness. A bit mild overall but not bad.

Pours thick mostly unclear ruby with a great sandy head and awesome lacing. Aroma brings some honey and a bit of spicey rye malts. Flavor had some bitter hop and the malts combined well, even after a year bottled. The flavors die but the body is nice and a bit creamy.

Had this in a tasting thanks to my boy Prazack. Very interesting and complex beer. Color was golden/amber. The rye malt is present most in the taste. Not my favorite style but liked it none the less.

Bottle shared at LeviLOL tasting - thanks Ryan! Dark amber pour with an off white head. Nice nose, good taste - lots of raisin and yeast flavor.

kramer (5346) - Sunbury, Pennsylvania, USA - MAR 21, 2014
Tap. Pours a mostly clear chestnut brown body with a small wispy beige head. The nose is heavily malty with some rye and spice, dark caramel, and light alcohol. The flavor is pretty big and solid, lots more rye than expected, balanced by lots of caramel malt. Not much spice, but a little clove and cinnamon on the back end. Thick and chewy body with a sticky and clingy sweetness and light soft carbonation. A big beer, but not overly alcoholic. Can’t see this guy aging too well FWIW.

EithCubes (5205) - New Jersey, USA - MAR 20, 2014
750mL bottle. Nose is heavy caramel with kneaded rye; deep malt with brown sugar and red berry, some potent Hefeweizen yeast, really a wild combination, rye spice simulating the best of the Doppelbocks. Pours a deep, dark red-brown and holds a jiggling, dense beige head. Taste is very dry, mild bitterness, lightly resinous underneath with flashes of citrus up top, lightly toasted rye with caramel and lemon/wheat traces, plenty of booze and warmth but not all that raucous. Spice is still turned up and the berry/clove phenolics still high-level. Full body with deep and rollicking malt and slightly sticky lips. Hops are either intentionally downplayed or crushed under the weight of the big and hearty mash. A lot to like here, especially the really heavy wallop of rye.

Bottle from Ithaca. Popped this on St Pattys so don't remember too much. Remember caramel full of grain. Wasn't very impressed.
