3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle: Deep hazy brown with a light ruby tone on edges. Thin tan head reduces to film with sparse lazy carbonation (must be the French malts). Strong nose of caramel malt. Body is medium, long and fruity sweet. finish is same as body but does not linger. This brew seems so large and cumbersome that I can only describe it as unbalanced and overbearing. Booziness appeared and then diminished. The pleasant fruity tones seemed separate from sip to sip.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
750ml bottle: Thanks to my brother-in-law for sharing this. This one pours a fairly opaque brown color. There was a fairly substantial head, but it didn’t last long. It left a little lacing. Nice aroma of yeast, breadiness, candi sugar, dark fruits. The taste is along the same lines. Dark fruits, some candi and caramel sugar, breadiness. The alcohol is hidden in this one. A real nice Quad.

(Rating #3380)

2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
My Bottom Line :
Subtle bubblegum and clove phenols ride this Quadrupel’s frothy bubbling, while alcohol heat and timid roastiness attempt to create complexity.
Further Personal Perceptions:
-A sheet of foam tops the cloudy dark red.
-The aroma is quite vapid for a Quadrupel...
-There is nothing technically wrong with this brew, but it holds back so much potential flavour that it becomes frustrating. I guess my expectations are too high when drinking a new example of this style?
-Fruity esters whisper in the background.

4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
Smooth tasting quad with great mouthfeel. Doesn’t have those strong estery malts that true Belgian quads have but the subdued dried fruit taste is very pleasant. Very drinkable. Great beer.

3.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
UPDATED: NOV 13, 2010 I had to let this "percolate" a bit to let some of the CO2 out, or else it would have foamed all over the place. Dark, foamy pour. The aroma was the best thing about it: tangy, rustic, astringent, and with a strong floral presence and a dash of cheese. The flavor was very sweet and bready, with some peat smoke and yeasty funk. Rye, tobacco, and brown sugar too. Pretty elaborate stuff: French malts, German hops, and Belgian yeast. It is rich, but I was not in love with it. It seems to fall apart a little under its own weight. Big isn’t always best - sometimes it is just good. And good is good.
