Ground Break is our new spring seasonal… it’s an Americanized (hoppy) Saison. It’s brewed with generous amounts of Amarillo, Crystal and Glacier hops (none added during the boil by the way- only first wort, whirlpool and dry-hop additions) and flaked rye. It’s fermented with a blend of Dupont and Chico yeasts. Very dry, ample yeast character, and hoppy. We’ve brewed a couple of batches so far, and expect it to start showing up on draft first, then in 6-packs and our variety 12-pack in February. It’ll last until May or so when we start rolling out this year’s version of Partly Sunny, our summer Wit-style beer! This will show up everywhere that our seasonal brews and variety packs are found: NY, PA, CT, MA, RI, NJ and OH.

POW! Peppery and Spicy! Americanized Saison is right but it isn’t just the hops that are coming across stronger than the more subdued continental version.

Bottle sample at a tasting at Dancing Camel. Thanks Tom L. Cloudy pale blond with white head. Citrus, lemon and lemon hard-candy aroma, bitter, hoppy, with a little poppy seed in the mouth. Long, mildly bitter and yet tarty finish, medium-bodied.

This beer pours clear and golden until the last few ounces with all the yeast sediment. The yeast swirls around and slowly blends in give the body a hazy appearance. The slow carful pour produces a huge billowy meringue like head that fills half the glass. It holes on forever and keep a good cap of foam on till the last sip. On the sides of the glass it leaves big splotches of foam lacing. There are strong hop presence along with all the typical estery and funky/medicinal Belgian yeast and malt notes. There are fruity notes from the malt and yeast as well as the hops. Hops add some citrus and spicy floral notes and the yeast/malt brings a mix of tropical fruit and mild white pepper like dry spice. There is a lot of complexity packed into this firmly medium bodied beer. There is a flash of candy and bready sweetness with estery yeast as well as dry funk and mellow phenolic spice. The hops which are more influential here then in a traditional Belgian Ale bring solid hop bitterness from the start to the finish and add there own floral and citrusy spice notes. It finishes with dry spice and firm dry hop bitterness. The palate is lively and well carbonated.

Aroma: The two things that stick out the most are cheesecloth and an herbaceous hop character, specifically basil. There’s also a bit of dandelion flower here as well. Has a pastoral feel. Appearance: Hazy, cloudy gold body with strong, lively carbonation; the white head never quite goes away, and leaves a white meringue. Flavor: A bit more grainy up front; more herbal than floral (like the nose); very dry and leaves a lingering bitter herbal impression on the palate. Palate: Full body, thick texture, lively carbonation, lingering finish. Overall: Some good bones here, but I must admit that the beer was much more enjoyable in the nose. Still, a pretty nice offering.

12oz bottle from Orchard Fresh, Orchard Park, NY. Clear straw with a thin white head; yeasty aroma with some tropical fruit in the background; bready body with a pleasant mango taste; and a lingering sour bitterness to finish. An interesting and different brew.

Bottle to glass. Hazy yellow body with a thick hearty white head. Nose is a dry bitter farmhouse hay, some sharp lemon. Taste is dry, bitter hay up front with a lemony bitter finish. Not bad. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Poured from a 12 ounce bottle. The aroma is sulfur, soft acidity, spicy yeast notes, faint mint character. The flavor is acidic, bready malts in the finish, the American hops are not overwhelming but they are very noticeable with orange, mango. This is a tasty saison.

Pours a clear golden yellow with a smallish white head, good lacing. Aroma is bready, biscuit, yeast, lemon zest, fresh grass. Taste is full of lemon zest and super light grassy hop, rye, yeast. Very refreshing.. Not a ton of flavor.
