Draught at the Craft Beer Festa Kyoto 2013. Big spicy sansho nose. Hazy dull straw color. Taste like .... fruit + a a whole lotta sansho / sweet, honey maltiness in mid / then another big sansho hit in final, with some good hoppy notes in finish. Not so bad, really. An almost curry-like intensity. The sansho does get to be a a bit much.

Bottle. Orange light brown pour with a finger thick white head. Herbs, spice, tomatoes, white pepper, bread, pizza and meaty. Very complex. A bit sour initially, light and bubbly. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Strong herb filled aroma with notes of parsley, oregano, and thyme. Very light, fizzy yellow appearance. Strong herb overtones with thyme and parsley overtones with a very pleasant honey, ginger and caramel backbone. Overall, very pleasant with massive drinkability. I’d give this an A rating.

Tap at Bankan. Clear golden amber colour, small white head. Aroma is not that strong, slight herb element, nothing much, bit of ginger, bit white pepper. Taste is ok, ginger again, slight caramel malt sweetness. Little bit of lemon at finish. It’s ok, but not that amazing. Feels a bit lifeless.

UPDATED: SEP 26, 2013 Bottle from Good Beer. Fruity sansho nose, herbal with citrus and light malts. spicy, herbal flavor, sansho, pepper, citrus, light pale malts. Light, crisp body, good bitterness. Much improved from 4 years ago, still not really my thing, and a bit too much spice, but not bad.

Draught at the Craft Beer Festival in Ichinoseki, Iwate, 2009. 5/2/3/3/7 A pale ale made with the Japanese spice sansho, often called Sezhuan Pepper. Unpleasant ginger and sansho aroma. Tart, astringent flavor. Detergent-like. Really bad! This spice does not work in beer!
