3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Can from Izumi-Chuo Co-Op, as Kuro Kura 7%. Pours near black with some fizz and a frothy light tan head that lasts. Light roasty and chocolatey aroma, oat. Flavour is similar, a light coffee note, a slight unwelcome tang in the finish that fades. Improves as it warms, medium body with gentle fizz and quite smooth, coats the mouth. Not bad overall.

Can from Brunnsbe, cheers! Chockolate and some roast in aroma. Very good! Taste has choko and a hint of chili. Palate is medium full with very little carbonation and long lasting aftertaste. Excellent stout!

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Can under the name Kuro Kura which is listed at 7% ABV bought at Ito Yokado. Drank straight from the can. Nice roasted malt aroma with a hint of coffee on the nose. Slightly creamy mouthfeel initially then the body starts to thin out. Tastes of roasted cacao, toasted kitkat and coffee. The 7% ABV is noticeable and boozy on the finish. Really not bad at all for a can that is starting to pop up a lot more places this year.

3.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Can from DON liquor shop in Kuzuha (as "Iwate Kura Kuro Kura"). Big chocolate nose, roast malt, and a touch of light blonde coffee. Thick dark brown, with translucent edges, and very thin head. Very dark roast malt initial, gentle berries, some licorice. Very smooth, with an oatmeal feel. Solid bitter finish. Medium body, perhaps a little too light. Mild but very tasty, creamy, and light.

3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
330 ml bottle bought at CitySuper in IFC, Central.
Translucent deep cola blackish brown colour with lots of dirt-like yeast sediments; One finger head and beige foam which last for 2 minutes; Moderate sticky lacing and very slight carbonation; Fragrant aroma of roasted coffee beans and cream, followed by light roasted malt, sugar, chocolate, Ovaltine and grass; Mid to light sweet taste of dark roasted malt, closely followed by a nice black coffee, strong smoke and nuts, cream, light chocolate, Cola, toffee, sugar, light liquorices, lime and grass;
Mid to light body, slightly thick and quite creamy palate; Mouth Feel is dominated by nice black coffee, roastyness is very strong, with expressive smoke and nuts. Crazy! Other than that, toffee and cream is light, and watery Cola-pop and hops takes over; Hoppiness is grassy nose as beer warms, sharp lime and grass taste. Liquorices is moderate and give it a workable bitterness but not impressive. Very abrupt finish; Fairly dry after taste, nutty and fairly bitter to mouth.
Comments: After the euphoria of its Oyster Stout brother, this one is an inevitable downer. Without the oysters, this one is quite thin in body, and lacking the smoothness, tension and sophistication of the former. Aroma aside, everything else seems a par below, while it’s still quite decent and good enough to put many stout wannabes to shame. Drinkable, but really as a stand-by to the all-mighty Oyster Stout.
