3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Sweet chocolate and some roastyness with an odd vegital quality, very porterish in the nose. Drys out nicely in the mouth with some green hop action, coffee roastyness and cool deep cocoa. Finishes peculiarly bitter but in a balanced way, with grass and dark chocolate. Pleasantly weird.

3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
330 ml bottle bought at CitySuper in IFC, Central.
Translucent deep cola blackish brown colour with lots of dirt-like yeast sediments; One finger head and beige foam which last for 2 minutes; Moderate sticky lacing and very slight carbonation; Fragrant aroma of roasted coffee beans and cream, followed by light roasted malt, sugar, chocolate, Ovaltine and grass; Mid to light sweet taste of dark roasted malt, closely followed by a nice black coffee, strong smoke and nuts, cream, light chocolate, Cola, toffee, sugar, light liquorices, lime and grass;
Mid to light body, slightly thick and quite creamy palate; Mouth Feel is dominated by nice black coffee, roastyness is very strong, with expressive smoke and nuts. Crazy! Other than that, toffee and cream is light, and watery Cola-pop and hops takes over; Hoppiness is grassy nose as beer warms, sharp lime and grass taste. Liquorices is moderate and give it a workable bitterness but not impressive. Very abrupt finish; Fairly dry after taste, nutty and fairly bitter to mouth.
Comments: After the euphoria of its Oyster Stout brother, this one is an inevitable downer. Without the oysters, this one is quite thin in body, and lacking the smoothness, tension and sophistication of the former. Aroma aside, everything else seems a par below, while it’s still quite decent and good enough to put many stout wannabes to shame. Drinkable, but really as a stand-by to the all-mighty Oyster Stout.

3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Medium brown head. Opaque black body. Deep mealy chocolatey aroma with milky coffee notes. Dry, sweetish roasty perfumy chocolate taste with mealy wooden notes. Mid-bodied. Mild, soft oatmealy mouthfeel. Dryish minty roasty aftertaste with perfumy jasmine, oatmeal, and chocolate notes. Also a grainy flavour, reminiscent of barley tea. Nice, harmonic, drinkable. (0.33l bottle, bought at brewery.)

3 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle from miketd. Thanks for this one! Pours black with a short lived beige head. Smell is sour malt and dark fruitiness. Kind of odd in a stout. Taste is not really sour however. More lightly roasty and chocolate like. Medium body and soft to normal carbonation. Thought it was going to be infected from the smell, but it turned out to be pretty solid. Unfortunately, the smell definitely detracts a lot for me on this one.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Aroma of chocolate, coffee, a touch of sour fruits, good sweetness. Medium roasting. Reasonably sweet flavor, light bitterness, slightly sour and lactic. Rather creamy and chocolaty. Relatively mild and balanced. Medium body as well. A nice stout, but with an espresso-like sourness that is a little irritating.

3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Solid Japanese stout that ticks all the obvious boxes. Dense black with a lasting corona. Classic aroma of molten bitter chocolate and mocha. Creamy mouthfeel. At the sweeter end of the stout scale, with more choc flavours and some coffee ashiness. (Bottle courtesy of TimE at Sully’s 2007 Xmas gathering - thanks fellas)
