COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This hauntingly good brew in your hand is rife with dark complexities. Eleven malts were used to create deep flavors of coffee, chocolate, caramel, and molasses. A hint of bitterness and herbal character from carefully selected American hops help support the monolithic maltiness of Dark Apparition. After a month of conditioning in stainless steel, the beer was transferred into bourbon barrels. For 8 months, Dark Apparition waited patiently in oak barrels until the time was right to spring forth with its ghostly gusto. A truly decadent brew that is intended to be poured into your favorite snifter and given time to warm up from its dark and cold resting place. Be aware when in the presence of Dark Apparition ’cause this ghost is a creeper.

Sampled at Nashville Beer Summit 1.22.11 - Yet another very dark pour of a Jackie-O’s beer. Looks tasty. Vanilla, booze, hazelnut, oak, and plenty of woodiness. Amazing again. Holy crap. These guys are so good. Great creamy mouth feel. A wish I could keep drinking these.

Huge thanks to Kan for bringing Brad, brewmaster at Jackie O’s to our Sunday afternoon tasting. This was an awesome sneak peek that is making almost drive for the release...Black with some really nice light tan head...The aroma here is awesome. Its super sweet with tons of honey, maple syrup, chocolate and vanilla. A perfect combination that you would think would be too sweet but somehow isn’t...The taste is almost as good, brings back all the sweetness of the aroma but brings out some of the wood here, which we got none of on the front. Lots of honey, vanilla, raspberries in the middle and wood. I really like it, would be perfect if a little more balanced with either some bitterness or light hop finish...Easy drinker can’t believe what the abv is. This is an awesome RIS. Its sweeter so as long as your like sweet stours you’ll love this.

Thank you for the bottle Joe! Impressive cocoa/expresso tinged head on light-impenetrable black beer. Aroma is sweet roasted malt, honey, molasses, marshmallow, and mellow, well-integrated bourbon. Smells amazing! Taste is bourbon up front followed by cocoa, bitter chocolate, dark fruit/raisin, light bitter hops, light roasted malt, and trailing alcohol from the bourbon. Smooth and light feel in the mouth. The heat from the bourbon and sweetness from the honey is slightly overplayed and detracts from the cocoa/roasted character but it’s still a very well done beer. Wow!

Bottle at the hotel tasting after Night of the Barrels at EBF. Pours a deep black with a thin tan to beige head. Big bourbon, roast, chocolate, coffee on the nose. Chocolate, with lots of bourbon. Roast, cocoa and some lingering chocolate.

This poured a very dark brown color with a lighter tan head. Aroma was of vanilla, bourbon/oak, and nice deep dark roasted malts. Flavor was a bit sweeter than expected from the aroma, lots of sweeter roasted malts, light chocolate, the bourbon is definately there and adds to the experience with out being dominating. Good stuff.

Bottle and served in Expedition snifter: Pours jet black with a fading frothy beige head and spotty lace, a bit oily. The aroma has notes of bourbon, ashy oak, vanilla, chocolate, coffee, brown sugar, molasses, plum, prune, booze, hint of peaty and leathery earth yeast and a slight disconcerting lacto sourness. Luckily that sourness does not appear on the palate but there is plenty of bourbon yummieness along with rich imperial stout malt tones. Roasty, charred, chocolate covered coffee beans, and some dark fruit undertones are found. Brash alcohol cleanse the palate of sticky and oily malt character, some bitterness is found well back on the palate along with a dash of salty and mineral note. Very warming, a sipper for sure with a sticky and lush feel. Not washed out like some barrel aged stout can get. Mikey Likey! Much thanks John (fiver29) for the brew.

1/15/11. Bottle thanks to SoLan at the Sea Bass tasting! Definite BA with vanilla and oak with a sweet malty presence flavor loaded with chocolate that ends with big vanilla and coconut. Quite good!

I retract anything negative I have ever uttered about Jackie O’s. Holy moly. Thanks to whoever shared this at Sea Bass. This is a beer that really benefits from the barrels. Nose is slightly oaky, coconut/vanilla, soft whiskey sweetness, cocoa, coffee beans. Taste follows closely, bits of warming bourbon in the front blending nicely with rich sweetness, but avoids being syrupy and has great flavorful balance. Not a very hoppy stout, and not much fruitiness, but an extremely good beer.

’09 BA DA 4-5 oz sample. A- Body is a very dark brown, nearly black hue. Served with virtually no head-but with a think off-white collar that remains thin but lingers on for awhile. Hints of vibrant red can be seen when this brew is held up to the light. S- Nose is classic BA RIS- Notes of anise, plum, chocolate, mochoa, bourbon, and just a hint of oak barrel. A mild fruity sourness also is in the background of the nose. T- There is a good amount of bourbon initially in the flavor-with light notes of plum, anise, coacoa, and oak. The finish offers a lot of bourbon with its assicoated heat-and a balance of the intitial flavors. The bourbon heat is moderate (not overpowering) and lingers on for quite awhile. M- VERY well done. Thick, viscous, and very smooth. Low to medium carbonation. D- This is a very good BA stout overall. The bourbon characteristics are certainly noticable and add a component of alcohol heat but provide a compliment to and do not overpower the other components.
