Bottle shared in the GTMW ticket line - Pours hazy, murky dark amber with a bubbly tan head. Nose is smoky sweet malt, caramel, and nuttiness. Taste is a bit flat with the smoky malt, a little soured. Slick and medium-bodied.
3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 TheAlum (4359) - Lisle, Illinois, USA - MAY 6, 2013
Bottle shared at Great Taste ticket line (Madison, WI). Pours a richer deep brownish copper pour, darker body with copper edges. Darker overall, frothy tannish head atop dies to a mellow layer, laces as a ring small. Aromas are lots of red fruit, Twizzlers and cherry meet oak, vanillla, a bit of heat. Peaty malt, sticky caramel, and toast. A lot of Twizzlers. Initial is thicker, toasty and peaty, carmelized and dry with oaky tannins. Much different than the nose off the bat. Middle shows more Twizzler, red fruit and carmelized malts. A bit sticky, toasty, and biscuity overall. Backend shows the barrel, gentle warmth, vanilla and a bit of coconut. Touch toasty, dry, with more toast, biscuit and red fruit. A bit hot as we finish up, the barrel starts to show up more prominently in the finish for me. Some vanilla, coconut, and toffee. More dry and tannic, hot as we end. The beer itself smells like a much different entity than I end up tasting. A lot more red fruit in the nose, the barrel thins this, heats it up, and leaves a mellow sticky malt profile that finishes hot, dry, tannic. Not bad. Enjoyable.

Bottle shared in the GTMW ticket line, pours a really dark brown with a light brown head, the aroma has quite a bit of smoke in it with bourbon and malt coming through as well, the flavor was a little sweeter than I expected on the front end with some peat and smoke in the finish, the bourbon shows up as well and isn’t overpowering, interesting stuff for drinking at 7 am.

22oz bottle, shared with the group. 2012 vintage, 119 / 192. ABV was 9.5%. Very dark brown color, light red, clear on the edges. Thin, light brown head. Little decent lace. Great aroma... Vanilla, peat, and light smoke in the nose. Bigger body. Smooth, crisp, lighter carbonation. More dry overall. Nice bitter, light savory taste. Little sweet. Good long peaty bitter aftertaste. Very light caramel notes. Good spread of lace. Really good... Way better than expected. Love that light, balanced sweetness and smoke, works great with the vanilla.

Bomber to snifter (thanks DrSilverworm). Bottle indicates the abv of this batch is 9.5%. Looks good; a murky brown with thin off-white lacing. Smells solid; peat, bourbon, and malt. Tastes like it smells with an average mouthfeel. Enjoyable.

My Bottom Line:
Black grapes take on vinous angles, as caramelized notes are levelled out by mild acidity.
Further Personal Perceptions:
-A creamy head of foam covers the clear burgundy.
-The mouthfeel is leaner than the average Scotch Ale’s.
-Drinkability is higher than most of the heavy hitters in this category, mostly because of the light acidity.
-The flavor profile is bold yet elegant.
-This is quite pleasant, but the malt flavors aren’t nearly as well developed as Alesmith’s Wee Heavy (barrel-aged or not) and Cigar City’s Big Sound (barrel-aged version).
Bottle.
