This hauntingly good brew in your hand is rife with dark complexities. Eleven malts were used to create deep flavors of coffee, chocolate, caramel, and molasses. A hint of bitterness and herbal character from carefully selected American hops help support the monolithic maltiness of Dark Apparition. After a month of conditioning in stainless steel, the beer was transferred into bourbon barrels. For 8 months, Dark Apparition waited patiently in oak barrels until the time was right to spring forth with its ghostly gusto. A truly decadent brew that is intended to be poured into your favorite snifter and given time to warm up from its dark and cold resting place. Be aware when in the presence of Dark Apparition ’cause this ghost is a creeper.

(Bottle) Pours near black with small brown head. The aroma holds wooden, light buttery, alcohol-driven, light vanilla-ish and glue-like bourbon with a medium to heavily coffee roasted background. Undertones of dark chocolate, anise, brown sugar, hops, black currant and asphalt. The flavour is light to medium sweet, medium bitter and tiny acidic. Bourbon up front in the flavour as well with undertones of roast and resinous hops. The mouthfeel is round and bit firey with light carbonation. Bitter hops and almost tar-like roast in the finish. Medium bodied.

Bottle shipped from Stateside and shared with friends. Bottle nr 322/384. The pour is medium thick blacky like a fine soy sauce. The dark brown head disappears quickly and sadly. The aroma is not that heavy and I get a christmas impression. There is plenty of chocolate, candid sugar, some metal and cinnamon. On top of that there is a mild salty touch that makes me think of soy again. Most of all the aroma is dominated of alcohol. The taste is too influated of the bourbon aging, and the sweet sweet bourbon vanilla is dominating too much. On top of the sweetness there is a harch wooden note, some coffee, chocolate and candid sugar. The mouthfeel is medium with a roasted finish.

Tasted in August 2011 from a capped 650mL bomber bottle shared by a generous gentleman. Pours a very thick and viscous opaque dark brown with a very thin tan head that leaves a thin collar of lace. The nose is very sweet with vanilla, caramel, bourbon, brown sugar, maple, coffee, chocolate, a hint of earthiness, and some alcoholic heat. The flavor is the same; very sweet up front with caramel, maple, vanilla, and brown sugar, with a lightly acidic note, and some nice coffee and dark chocolate bitterness. The body is nearly full and oily with light carbonation and a long oaky bourbon and vanilla finish.

Phone rate. 22oz 153/384, thank you Max. Black with small oily tan head, down to a thick ring. Bourbon and coffee chocolate notes, mod spicy boozy heat, dry roasty finish, bitterness 3. Aroma follows, no surprises. Full body, light prickly carbonation. Good.

There is the aroma of sweet vanilla, roasted malts, and soft chocolate. It pours dark thick coffee in color with a decent caramel head. Flavors are so smooth for the abv with notes of the barrel at first that blend well with vanilla and caramel notes. Love the body from the barrelc not too bubbly or thick - balance!

A: The beer pours a black color and looks almost flat, in fact, it is. No head to be found, either. S: Jesus is this boozy. Tons of bourbon, booze, and ethanol type aromas on this one. Lots of oak with a bit of vanilla as well as some chocolate and roasted malt notes, just a hint of coffee, as well. T: Tastes a bit better, but still a touch harsh. Lots of booze/ethanol as well as a bit of actual bourbon flavor. Some wood and vanilla are there as well as roast, chocolate, and a touch of coffee. M: Medium bodied with essentially no carbonation. O: Way too harsh, way too much booze, and no carbonation? Not a winning combination.

(22oz bomber thanks to Exiled) very dark brown pour with a few bubbles. Nose of vanilla, barrel, rich chocolate, a bit of alcohol and oddly some sulfur aromas. Taste of maple, barrel, bourbon, big vanilla, rich linger and a medium body. Actually refreshing which is odd for this style.

2011 22 oz. bottle (16 of 336) via trade with Tripphop (BA) - Pours a dark brown color with a half finger thick tan head. Very light tiny spotted lacing. Aroma is roasted malt, chocolate, dark esters, licorice, and oak/bourbon. Flavor is chocolate, bourbon, light vanilla, and dark esters. The bourbon and dark fruits linger a bit in the finish. Also, the finish seems a touch thin for a big beer like this. The alcohol is noticeable, but doesn’t warm my stomach like some other high ABV beers. A really good beet. Thanks Tripp.

Bottle 171/384. Pours black with a fair amount of brown head. Aroma is bourbon, vanilla coconut and chocolate. Taste is chocolate, coconut, vanilla and some caramel/toffee notes. This reminds me of Churchill’s FInest Hour 2011, very tasty

Huge thanks to Shaun for this one. Aroma: Anise and vanilla, coffee, chocolate malts and bourbon. Very intense. Appearance: Black pour with offwhite head. Flavors: Bourbon and vanilla cream makes a perfect mariage with chocolate and coffee. Very well integrated. Palate: Very heavy with light carbonation. A dessert in itself. Overall: Very good barrel aged IS. The flavors are intense and you can really feel the barrel presence without being cloying. This is not infinitly complex but the flavors are so well blended together.
