COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Kopi Luwak coffee has a very interesting history. Dutch Colonists began to cultivate prized coffee beans on the islands of Java and Sumatra in the early 18th century. The indigenous people that farmed the coffee and worked on the plantations were prohibited to harvest the coffee fruit for their own use. The farmers and plantation workers soon realize that the nocturnal Asian Palm Civet would consume the fruit and excrete the coffee beans undamaged. The natives gather the droppings of the civet, cleaned the beans, dried them in the sun, roasted the beans, and made “their” coffee beverage. During to the beans strange journey through the civet, digestive enzymes alter the beans reducing the bitterness, harshness, and promote protein development. This gives the coffee a very robust and round character. Once the Dutch caught wind of this process, they realized that the natives’ coffee was far superior to their prized coffee. The most expensive coffee in the world was born. Inspired by this amazing coffee and the natives bizarre story, we set out on a mission to provide you, the craft drinker, with not only a world class barrel aged beer, but also world class coffee at an affordable price. Dark Apparition is our ultra rich Russian Imperial Stout. Black as midnight and rife with dark complexities, Dark Apparition is a beast of a brew. Freshly emptied Woodford Reserve barrels were filled with hauntingly decadent beer. The beer aged for 4 months before receiving over a pound specially roasted Kopi Luwak Coffee. After an additional month of aging the beer was bottled. Kopi Luwak Bourbon Barrel Dark Apparition is a great beer to share with friends and a surefire conversation starter at your next get together.

Clear dark black brown colour with a average, frothy, good lacing, mostly diminishing to lasting, light beige head. Aroma is heavy malty, roasted, burnt, chocolate, coffee, alcohol - bourbon, rice coffee. Flavour is moderate to heavy sweet and heavy bitter with a long duration, coffee, bourbon, vanilla, dusty coffee. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft. [20111203]

Bottle thanks to hophead22. Pours with a near black body with a small tan head. Aroma are a touch tart, currants, spicy/peppery coffee, roasty, chocolate, vanilla. Flavors are coffee, nutty, and good roast. A bit of vanilla towards the finish. A bit tart as well. Seems like the early onset of an infection. Dry and a bit thin.

Bottled at oh6gdx’s birthday bash at chriso’s. Really black, no head. Aroma of treacle and vanilla. Sweet and heavy with massive body. Super sticky and bold, truckloads of treacle and vanilla. Some coffee may be there too. Not a complete trainwreck, but not far from it.

Bottle at Pat’s birthday tasting at chriso’s. Pours an oily, rich brown with a foamy, beige head. Rick coffee aroma. Very sweet flavor with plenty of coffee, mocha, roasted malts, brown sugar, some lightly stinging booze. Full bodied with fine to average carbonation. Warm finish with wood, roast, booze, coffee, mocha. Good stuff overall.

Bottle at Pat’s birthday tasting at Chriso’s. Dark brown colour with an off white head. Nose is deep roasted coffee bean, bourbon barrel sweetness, vanilla. Taste is chocolate, coffee and soft bourbon notes on the finish. There’s a touch of acidic red berry sourness in there too. Balance is good.

Bottle at Chriso Patriks Bday tasting. Black beer. Thin tan head. Classy choc. Good coffee. Bit of heat on finish. Coffee choc liquer finish. Choc cookie finish.

2011 bottle45/213 at rbwg 3/5/11. pours more of a dark porter brown than a typical stout black. either way, there’s no head. the aroma is a massive coffee monster with vanilla and chocolate arms and eyes that shoot spicy green barrel goodness...eh. there is a slight coffee tartness on the finish of the flavor (which is more or less the aroma) and a lingering ashiness. not a whole bunch of bourbon. fairly dry. nice. 8/3/8/3/17

Bomber. Poured deep brown with a rich yellowy-beige head.. looked great, but the head settled quickly. The aroma picked up sour coffee and bourbon notes over burnt black patent and meatier coffee.. oak, sweet bourbon, and peppery alcohol really stick on the back of the nose.. some nice components, but it came across a little brash. The flavor found tangy bourbon and oak throughout.. meaty, earthy, and nutty coffee plus mocha at the core.. vanilla, rye, peppery alcohol, and more bourbon around.. finished with sour barrel that masked some of the tasty underlying brew and coffee.. really tasty coffee came back after the swallow. Medium-plus bodied and sharp from the barrel on the palate.. dry and grainy on the back-end.. I don’t think the bourbon barrel was necessary here, but it was still a good brew.
