Kopi Luwak coffee has a very interesting history. Dutch Colonists began to cultivate prized coffee beans on the islands of Java and Sumatra in the early 18th century. The indigenous people that farmed the coffee and worked on the plantations were prohibited to harvest the coffee fruit for their own use. The farmers and plantation workers soon realize that the nocturnal Asian Palm Civet would consume the fruit and excrete the coffee beans undamaged. The natives gather the droppings of the civet, cleaned the beans, dried them in the sun, roasted the beans, and made their coffee beverage. During to the beans strange journey through the civet, digestive enzymes alter the beans reducing the bitterness, harshness, and promote protein development. This gives the coffee a very robust and round character. Once the Dutch caught wind of this process, they realized that the natives coffee was far superior to their prized coffee. The most expensive coffee in the world was born. Inspired by this amazing coffee and the natives bizarre story, we set out on a mission to provide you, the craft drinker, with not only a world class barrel aged beer, but also world class coffee at an affordable price. Dark Apparition is our ultra rich Russian Imperial Stout. Black as midnight and rife with dark complexities, Dark Apparition is a beast of a brew. Freshly emptied Woodford Reserve barrels were filled with hauntingly decadent beer. The beer aged for 4 months before receiving over a pound specially roasted Kopi Luwak Coffee. After an additional month of aging the beer was bottled. Kopi Luwak Bourbon Barrel Dark Apparition is a great beer to share with friends and a surefire conversation starter at your next get together.

A: The beer pours black in color with a finger of tan colored foam. S: Plenty of coffee aroma to this. Its really nice and has a touch of spice to it. Lots of vanilla and bourbon notes with a touch of oak. Chocolate and roasted malt aromas to go along with all the coffee. T: A fairly substantial amount of semi-sweet dark chocolate to go with all the intense coffee. Still lots of bourbon and vanilla from the barrel and minimal oak. Moderate sweetness of toffee and molasses. M: Medium to full bodied with a medium carbonation. O: Easily the best of the Dark Apparition varieties that Ive had. Really nice stuff.

Big thanks to markwise for sharing this beauty that pours deep darkness with mocha head. The aroma offers up black strap molasses, some dark roasted coffee, a mild level of chili peppers and dusty malt balls. The taste is rich and yummy with molasses, dark to near burnt roasted malts, black strap molasses and rich oily yummy, did I mention rich, coffee beans. I get a faint chili pepper sense hovering around the edges of the flavor. Very nice brew.

Bottle shared by badnewsbeers, #212/213, 2011 vintage. Deep opaque brown body with reddish highlights; thin clumping beige head. Nose of chocolate wafer, coffee, and booze. Strong coffee and alcohol notes in the body; also dark chocolate. Rough with serious prickly heat. Good, close to very good.

Bottle... Pours dark brown with a typical Dark Apparition head. The bouquet delivers on its promise of fudge, expensive deeply-roasted coffee and vanilla. Full-bodied with a lightly creamy mouthfeel and subdued carbonation. The flavor is acrid and bittersweet (more sweet than bitter), offering deeply roasted malts and coffee, dark chocolate and warm bourbon... followed loosely by a hint of butter. Finishes acrid and just short of tart. Bottle generously shared by darkguardian!

Big thanks to darkguardian for sharing this bottle. Dark brown pour with a tan head. Aromas of vanilla beans and expresso. The body is a little thin. Its very hard for me to get past the flavor of cheap whiskey. Im shocked to here that these are Woodfords Reserve Barrels.

It pours a dark dark dark brown. Dark tan suds form a halo around the glass. Roasty coffee nose with bourbon boozy notes peaking through along with some brown sugar, chocolate, bourbon vanilla, and some more booooooze. Soft light carbonation...big coffee and cream flavors, delicate notes of bourbon, vanilla, brown sugar, and cookies. big roasty coffee finish.

Ba kopi dark ap. On tap at Jackie Os during its own release party.. Pours same as the rest... Aroma of coffee, not as assertive, with a vanilla and bourbon barrel presence... Flavors are bourbony upfront with an equalizing coffee presence although somewhat subdued compared to normal kopi. Medium bodied which applied also the same to the carbonation. 8/4/8/3/16

Thanks to my Ohio connection for this one. Pours dark brown with a tan head. Nose is nice dark, roasted chocolatey coffee with slight vanilla, roasted malts, and just enough barrel to add complexity. Flavor is similar with coffee, coffee all over, dark chocolate, vanilla, breaking into some chocolatey kopi coffee with bourbon and a hint of wood. Flavor profile is medium-bodied and just exuding goodness all over. Very enjoyable.
