It is no secret that Athens, Ohio isnít a booming metropolis. In fact, Athenians believe that they live in a world all their own. I am never surprised when out-of-towners tell me that my home is "in the middle of nowhere." This beer is crafted with Athensí finest maple syrup and honey. A decadent oatmeal stout aged in Woodford Reserve bourbon barrels. Small is good, hard to find uniqueness is great, and creativity spun by geographic isolation is even better. Tip this beer back for all the small town wackos making inspired, small batch beer for city slickers and townies alike.

Bomber: Thanks Ferillo: Bottle #35/298: Vintage 2011: Served in a Chouffe glass: Black beer with a thin brown head. Aromas of cream, wood, red fruit, light roast, light alcohol, nettle, some liquorice, some coffee, hint of bourbon and some berries... Flavour is bitter, spiced, some purple fruits, light roast, light coffee, wood roast, some liquorice, light nutty, light dry, grain roast... Aftertaste is warm, bitter, roast, malty, herbal, light liquorice and nutty wood roast tones. Low carbo, light watery close to silky yet spicy mouthfeel and more than medium bodied. Alcohol spice. Seems like a light infection, something berry a like... But can taste the Imperial Stout tones pretty well.

These comments are for an infected bottle of Middle of Nowhere. If given the chance, Iíll drink an uncorrupted Middle of Nowhere and rerate this beer. While this Imperial Stoutís color and head were unaffected, aroma and taste were definitely sour. Mouthfeel was moderate and the finish was warm. You could feel the effect of those bourbon barrels, but sadly, you couldnít taste too much of them.

(Thanks Josh "StFun") Bottle. A- Sour, tart, citrus. A- Black color, black liquid, brown head. T- Sour, tart, citrus, subtle bourbon. P- Medium body, average texture, average carbonation, sour finish. O- This was indeed infected, and tasted sour and tart as well, but it sure did look nice. I was excited as I love the additions of the maple syrup and honey and barrel aged but alas it was not to be.

This poured a pitch black color with a tan head. Aroma was lots of chocoalte, light maple, light oak and bourbon too. Flavor was nice blend of roast, bourbon, sweet honey.maple, and some light smoke too. Hides the alcohol very well.

Bomber. Darkest brown in color with a swirly tan head. Nice roast chocolate bourbon barrel aroma. The flavor is sour and nasty. Menthol, roast, maple syrup. Infected wild yeast. Medium-full body with higher carbonation. Not good.

"Dang, Iím liking this Jackie Oís. They know how to make a stout! This super smooth oatmeal imperial has an interesting subtle addition of maple syrup. that combined with the base beer, and the vanilla sweetness of the bourbon barrels make for one nice dessert. you can taste each component, which is nice in a barreled brew. quite choclatey as well."

Pours jet black with a small brown head. Spotty lacing down the glass with a tad bit of retention. Lots of things going on in the aroma. Tons of fudge, dark chocolate, vanilla, oak and a touch of smoke to go with some heavy roasted malt. Bourbon and maple syrup are present, but not overpowering. Unfortunately the flavor does not live up to the rich, complex nose. Still a ton of chocolate and roasted malts in here, but the sweetness takes over and swings the balance. Donít get a ton of maple syrup, but the honey overpowers everything else and creates a weird combo with the barrel notes which are much too subdued for my tastes. Medium bodied and good carbonation levels, but the beer is a touch thin. Still finishes somewhat roasty and dry, but with the honey sweetness adding to that the combo just doesnít work. Interesting concept and something that sounds great on paper, but the execution here didnít do it for me. If they could actually make something that tastes like this smells, Iíd be all in. As it played out, this was just a thin, honey sweet jumbled mess.

Pours thick unclear black coffee with a dakr tan head that has a beautiful cinnamon hue. Aroma is a bit lighter than expected, a bit of maple and subtle sweet roasted malts. Flavor brings a soft tart profile rounding out notes of creamy sweet coffee, roasted maples, and maple.

2011 bottle 225 of 298...Pours black with ruby hues and very little mocha head. Aroma has roasty dark fruit and subtle vanilla and bourbon. Flavor has a tart dark fruit...cherry...that quickly fades to chocolate and then oaky/vanilla bourbon. Mouthfeel is medium and the finish is slightly warming and has tart fruit and mild bourbon. Not sure if this has soured or was infected ot the tartness was intended but its not that bad.
