Firefly Amber Ale has been a staple in our brewpub for the past 5 years. After 4 years of brewing our beloved amber, I decided to change things up a bit and double the recipe. Twice the amount of malt and hops went in to our kettles and created something fantastic, something SuperFly! To take this new creation to the next level we allowed it to age inside brandy barrels for 8 months. Big notes of biscuit, caramel, toffee, and tantalizing brandy character that contributed fruity complexities and hints of American oak. Pair with stinky cheeses, bread pudding, and beef burgundy.

Fratto (2845) - Arlington, Texas, USA - FEB 26, 2012
Bottle shared at the RBWG in Austin. Orange pour with an off-white head. Aroma is old fruit, maybe a little sour. Taste is caramel, wood, more old fruit, and an awkward finish.

2/25/12. Bottle shared at RBWG 2012. Creamy amber pour with a small khaki head. Sweet, buttery aroma with bits of wood and vanilla on top of caramel. Sweet, caramel entry with more wood and sweet vanilla. Maybe a bit oxidized... not bad.

Pours amber in color with a khaki colored head. Thereís a light butter quality to the nose which is not very pleasing. Some sweet toffee and other sugar notes to go with a hint of vanilla and oak. Just a hint of brandy on the nose. The flavor is similarly lackluster. Mild brandy, sweet toffee and malt, and too much butter (well, any is really too much). Maybe just a hint of dark fruit. Medium body and carbonation.

Appearance is slightly better than the Sonoran 200, but still a hint of runny poop. No head really present except for a couple of sparse bubbles on the surfact. Definite grain presence in the aroma that smells like wheat bread, some toffee and caramel, and some of the brandy barrel is present. Everything is fairly muted, and seems off to me. Taste is pretty similar with a lot of muted flavors never really coming together. I get more of the brandy barrel than in the aroma, some cardboard, caramel, and some apple skins. Livelier than expected on the tongue which helps make this better than the dull feeling of the Sonoran 200. This beer never fully comes together for me. It isnít as bad as it may seem from my rating, but it just lacks anything that stands out to me.

Bomber shared with Mattyb83, pours murky brown/amber with no head. Aroma is a weird acidic, tart, bourbon funk, caramel, and toffee. Bourbon isnít overpowering but there really isnít anything to over power here. Some nutty caramel flavors, some fruits, and booze.

Bomber shared with mattyb83 and atom. Pours a somewhat oxidized looking dark amber with some more light brown highlights. Aroma of some grain, crystal malt, brandy, wet wood, and some strange acidity that I canít put my finger on. Just huge wood and brandy notes in the flavor. Theres some sort of mango or tropical fruit notes intertwined that are overwhelmed by the wood. Interesting, but not crazy about it.

My first Jackie-O. The aroma had the brandy. Sour, cherryish, astringent, medicinal. Overcarbonated. Grows on me, so drinkable. Decent beer, but overall disappointing.

Bottle... Hazy burnt-orange ale with a small, creamy, white head. The aroma offers up caramel, earthy wood, praline, lactic acid and some odd funk that I canít quite place. Full-bodied and silky with low carbonation. In the flavor, tangy lactic acid notes overrun the malty goodness that once was. Thereís only trace bitterness here. Finishes tangy and a touch dry. Thanks to GatorGuy92 for the share. Pours a hazy brown with a white head. Nose is brandy, caramel, some raisins, and a hint of booze. Flavor is similar with the brandy and the barrel fighting at first and making friends at the end. The brandy comes forward in an interesting way to play with the malt and caramel of the amber. Interesting sipper with a hint of booze.

Hazy red brown color with a small, light tan head that left nice lacing on the glass. Aroma of brandy, roast, cherries, caramel malts, smoke, vanilla, wood, and alcohol. Taste of roast, charred barrel, brandy, wood, some vanilla, sweeter dark cherry, tobacco, and sharp alcohol in the finish.
