draft at Jackie Os (from notes). Pours murky dark brown/black with a small beige head. The aroma was tart, vinous, berries with some hints of roast, vanilla and alcohol. The flavor had roast and chocolate that became somewhat hidden with the tart raspberries and vinous notes from the barrel. Some acidity and some alcohol come through. Interesting.

Chocolate brown with a grainy texture. Strong alcohol character, ethyl notes, and liquor bop the nose along with roastiness. Medium roast in the body, with champagne yeast and oaked chardonarry flavors. Intense, more berryness and cabernet toward the finish. A colossal beer than runs too hot for my palate.

Growler. Thanks alex. Pours murky ebony with no head or lace. Vinous vanilla nose, oaky and roasty. Lots of elements competing. Creamy medium body with lively carb. Tannic. Vinous. Roasty and fruity and interesting.

Sample during Jackie Os 4th Anniversary Extravaganza. Aroma of berries. Flavor was overwelmingly "Grapey". Yeah. Its a word. Preferred the basic Betty. The barrel aging overpowered this brew.

Sample at the brewpub. This brew is a brownish-black color with a thin khaki head that dissipates quickly. Stringy lacing on the glass. Vinous aroma with touches of tart fruits and herbs. Rich and smooth body with flavors of dry wine, malt and mildly sour fruit. The finish is dry with the Cabernet flavor lingering past the vanilla and fruit. Interesting overall, bit not something I would go back to repeatedly.

Sample at the brewpub. Black pour with a thin tan head. Tart grape and wine aroma with some green olive and berry character. Malty flavor with lots of the cab barrel wine character. Pretty good, but doesnt taste much like a porter. I think the cab barrel took over the original flavors. Would love to try this side by side with the original and bourbon barrel versions.

7/13/2009: Jackie-Os Cabernet Barrel Aged Black Betty (Imperial Raspberry Vanilla Porter) is dark brown with a frothy beige head. The aroma presents light red wine, minerals, and brown sugar. The flavor has traces of vanilla and black raspberry, but it is mostly dominated by deep red wine and dark fruits. There is some caramelized maltiness in the finish, but not much. This beer is pretty good, but I think that the wine really dominated the beer to the point of supressing just about all of its characteristics. I love the complexities and depth added to beer by aging it in wine barrels (bourbon barrel aging is getting boring!), but the beer just got crushed by the Cabernet. I think they should do this again with the same barrel and see if a better harmony is achieved between the Imperial Raspberry Vanilla Porter and Cabernet.

Snifter (draught) at Jackie Os Pub & Brewery in Athens, Ohio during Ohio Brew Week 2009. Rating #2 for this beer.

On tap for Brew Week in Athens. I just cant appreciate this beer. Dark and sweet, and much smoother than the Black Betty. But, the wine flavor from the barrel aging covers so much of the richness of the beer. Just too overpowering.
