The character pictured on the front of this label is Jonathan Holmberg. Jonathan has been a bartender at what now is Jackie Os for the past 15 years. In 2004 he helped me get my foot in the door and has been a dear friend ever since. Jonathan is a true eccentric and this beer is nothing short of that. Our robust porter was placed into Cabernet barrels eight months ago. Wild yeast and Lactobacillus were added to the barrels to give the beer a tart edge and some very rustic and fruity qualities. Sixty pounds of tart cherries were added to each barrel to take this beer in a unique direction. Notes of cherries, oak, chocolate, wine, and leather all find a special spot in this brew. Cab Cherry Man is a beer that can stand up to the antiquing, joking, halloween-loving, and sweet personality that is Jonathans. Cheers, buddy! -Brad Clark, brewer

So a really funky and weird idea. It came out more of a fruit beer than anythign for me, the porter dosne dominate the huge barrel and cherry notes.

Sample at the HSC Sour Beer Tasting on 06/19/2010: Thanks to JaBier for sharing bottle #106/156. The beer is a dark brown color with some hints of red. Thin light beige head that recedes quickly, and spotty lacing. Aroma of vinous fruit, dark malt and chocolate. Rich body with flavors of black cherry, roasted malt, vanilla and cedar. The finish is malty with a lingering cherry aftertaste. Good all around.

22oz bomber thanks to JCB! Pours a deep amber with not much of a head nor lace- okay because its barrel aged! Very sweet nose with oxidized fruit, dark chocolate, cherries. Taste is a bit like a sour cherry porter. Still, it comes off a bit medicinal. Really interesting.

22oz bottle, shared by caterwaul. Bottle 30/312, 2012 vintage. Very dark brown color. Thin light brown head. Leaves nice arcs and dots of lace. Awesome cabernet dark grape, chocolate aroma, light wood. Very nice light to moderate tart taste, not overly sour, but pleasantly so. Light sweet taste. Bigger body. Nice chewiness to the texture. Light carbonation. Lightly sticky texture. Awesome, delicious complex barrel-aged imperial porter.

Bottle shared by Sean, thanks! Poured a clear brown with an off-white head that started and remained at the edges and laced nicely. Aroma had a note of dry red wine with red fruits and some underlying dark and roasted grains. Flavor had a dry red wine note with red fruits and a bit of roasted grains lying underneath.

Pour out of 22 oz bottle, dark reddish brown with white head, aroma brought notes of oak, cabernet grapes, some slight red raisin, dark fruits, rich caramel and toffee, some sour fruit notes with a hint of lactic acid, with a ever so slight hint of acetic acid. Taste was a mix of slight tart fruit with lots of cabernet grapes, hints of caramel, toffee, some acetic and lactic acids, finishing with an oaky dry finish. Wish there was more cherry, it got kind of lost.

courtesy of Markwise pours reddish, no head. aroma and flavor, loads of cherries / mild cherry tartness. Barrel on this one was rather enjoyable, not overdone, lingering chocolate malts, and dark fruits; currants. Cabernet adds a nice warming abv and grape like mouthfeel that blends perfectly with the barrel. Another tasty treat by Jackie-O

2009 and 2011 vintages tried side-by-side. 2009: bottle 51/156, 2011: 229/384. Both poured a dark, murky brown with a reddish hue; the 2011 was deeper and redder and the 2009 was cloudier and browner. Aroma of cherries, grapes, oak, brown sugar, and toasted malts; the berries and cabernet really comes through stronger in the 2011 but the 2009 shows more complexity. Flavor of tart cherries, grapes, and plums, along with toast and oak. Medium-bodied, with low carbonation and a tart mouthfeel. The 2009 is more tart and the 2011 is more vinous. Slight edge to the 2009, but both were very good.

Bottle 50/156 thanks to a trade with St.Fun. Pours with a brown body and a minimal head, but the body stains the glass. Aroma of cabernet wine, oak, spiciness, fudge/chocolate, earthy, light sourness, nutshells and vanilla. Taste is sour, wet wood, a bit thin, vanilla, raspberry and cinnamon. Thin body, yet a creamy mouthfeel. Tannic.

Yet another very cool brew courtesy of markwise. Pours mahogany with thin tan head. The aroma has at first a thin pulse of roasty malts and molasses and then moving into modest red wine grape tartness as well as mild notes of oak. The taste is smooth to start with some roasty malts moving toward sour red wine and then some modest tartness too. It stays modestly tart into the finish and becomes somewhat refreshing.
