This hauntingly good brew in your hand is rife with dark complexities. Eleven malts were used to create deep flavors of coffee, chocolate, caramel, and molasses. A hint of bitterness and herbal character from carefully selected American hops help support the monolithic maltiness of Dark Apparition. After a month of conditioning in stainless steel, the beer was transferred into bourbon barrels. For 8 months, Dark Apparition waited patiently in oak barrels until the time was right to spring forth with its ghostly gusto. A truly decadent brew that is intended to be poured into your favorite snifter and given time to warm up from its dark and cold resting place. Be aware when in the presence of Dark Apparition ’cause this ghost is a creeper.

Bottle shared by someone from the Mikkeller Aarhus crew - Thanks! Pours black with no head. Aroma of sweet bourbon, wood, toffee, dark thick malty notes, vanilla, chocolate and dark fruits. The taste has some roasted malts, chocolate, toffee, weak bourbon, vanilla, dark fruits leading to a slight savory and sweet end. Awesome stuff!

2016 edition, pour to oversized snifter on a blustery frosty eve. Pitch black with quickly fizzling toffee head that dissipates to nothing. Some sprightly bubbles sparkle to the surface long after the pour. Hefty nose of toffee, milk chocolate, burnt caramelized sugar, mocha, ash, oak, alcohol, and molasses. Creamy body of vanilla, date, milk, mocha, sweet chocolate, oaky and alcohol on the way down. Carbonation is a bit sprightly and takes away from the creamy, yet fairly medium body (for an RIS). All the flavors are there though. Sip slow, and cozy up.

Bottle. A beer that takes and needs its time. Overwhelming salty cheese aromas at first, mostly coming from the decent barrel I think. Peat and caramel, too. Oily slick but smooth texture. Warms the body from within. Heavy, but not as full on the palate as I expected.

(2015 375ml bottle from Mikkeller Webshop) Pours pitch black with the barest few tiny bubbles ringing the glass. Aroma has loads of dark chocolate bar, Caramilk candy, bourbon, vanilla bean, marzipan, oak, a tiny bit of a spiced/herbal cola note in the background. Bit of alcohol. Flavour has a sweet core of milk chocolate and brown sugar with lots of bourbon and vanilla immediately apparent. A little cola, with soft dried dark fruit and nut notes. Oak quite clear from the middle on. Some toast in the finish but not heavily roasted. Moderately high alcohol heat. A bit thin for style with very low carbonation. A nice bourbon BA imp stout, balanced but maybe lacking some weight and punch to take it into the top echelon, especially in the mouthfeel.

A depth of flavors going on here - moleasses, chocolate, bourbon, oak, booze, coffee. So malty, so complex, so strong. Dig it.
