From notes. First reviewed 6/29/2011. Poured from a growler into a tulip. Thanks to readbaron for bringing this one out. Out of the bottle this pours a mahogany / black color, with a one finger off-white head. No real lacing, although it seemed to leave a little oily residue on the glass. Vanilla, hazelnut, and walnuts all shine through, really dominating the smell. There is some cocoa and roast malt in there as well. The nut flavors really control the flavor as well. It is more like drinking an imperial nut brown ale with a dash of dark malt in it. Hazelnuts, walnuts, and pecans all blend together nicely with some vanilla, with cocoa and medium roasted malt providing the support. Fairly sweet, but not cloyingly so. I could enjoy a fair amount of this. Like the other Dark Apparitions I have tried, this is smooth and creamy, with a nice light to medium creamy carbonation. The nuts add an oiliness to an already viscous brew. This was very enjoyable and the addition of nuts really impact the flavor of the beer. There is no nuance here. The oily residue, although impossible to eliminate in a brew with this many nut additions, lowers the score in a few places. A solid beer though.

Share courtesy of Gription79. It pours with a dark mahogany body supporting a tan head of foam. The aroma initially has a vague but pleasing nut sensation and then it seem to get into booziness, dark roasted malts and faint chocolate brownie. The taste has a nice chocolate bar goodness that heads into smooth semi sweet nuttiness and dark roasted malts. To midway and into the finish it grows more and more boozy. Nice sipper.

UPDATED: MAY 26, 2013 Staff only 2012 Bottle thanks to Dallas. Pours a pure black color with a small beige head. A sweet light fruity and nutty nose. Sweet vanilla and cocoa, very nutty, sweet overall and quite light despite the ABV. Note: it says 20% aged in Bourbon Barrels on the label.
