4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottle shared by alexsdad06. Poured a dark brown color with an average frothy brown head that lasted with excellent lacing. Moderate to heavy roasted chocolate, caramel and rum alcohol aroma. Heavy sweet dark chocolate malt, rum, wood flavor with a heavy sweet and small alcohol bite finish of long duration. Full body with a smooth texture and flat carbonation. This is a another standout beer.

3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
22 oz. bottle, pours pitch black with a medium light brown head. Nose is full of rum and raisins, without any booziness, and probably subverting the original characteristics of the beer. Flavour brings out the rum barrels upfront, along with raisins and loads of booze. There is a bit of tartness in there, due to the rum barrels, without being overbearing. Fairly viscous and sticky. Solid stuff, but nothing very interesting.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Bottle @ home, via the rotbox. Thanks to alexsdad for sending! Pours a black appearance with a lasting dark brown head. Possible infection. There’s some blackberry, grape and dark fruit notes in the nose. Some tannins, cinnamon, and a little bit of roast in the aroma as well. Twangy flavor. Some roast along with raisin, burnt sugar, and chocolate in the flavor. Moderate high sweetness. Dull bitterness. A little boozy. Ok but a little gooey.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
22oz bottle, shared by alexsdad06. 2011 vintage, bottle 211 of 216. Very dark brown, red color. Nice thin lighter brown bubbly head. Good color.Dots of lace. Lightly tart, vinous smells in the nose. Light tart, lightly spicy in the flavor. Moderate bitter. Light alcohol warmth. Bigger body. Smooth, kind of creamy, lighter carbonation. Sort of a chewier texture. More dry finish. Dark fruit, light spice, some dark chocolate, moderate to bigger roast, some tannic character to the aroma. Very complex, tasty aroma to this, but it’s lightly over-tannic, hint of tartness to it. Overall, very interesting, enjoyable, tasty variant of Dark App. Excited to try a fresh vintage at the upcoming 8th Anniversary party.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
UPDATED: DEC 25, 2011 Bottle shared by Sean, thanks! Pours black with a dark brown head that dissipates slowly to the edges. Aroma has a good amount of barrel that combines pretty nicely with the roasted malts, dark chocolate and a bit of bitter coffee. Flavor starts with roasted malts and dark grains backed by dark chocolate and a bit of bitter coffee and a good amount of rum in the finish.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
22 oz. bottle via trade. 2011 release, bottle 191/216. Pours a deep cocoa brown with a small tan ring for a head. Aroma was sweet, with butterscotch, vanilla, dried dark fruit, oak, and rum throughout. Flavor of vanilla, butterscotch, cream, rum, oak, dark fruits, and boozy bread. Medium-bodied, with low carbonation and a mouthfeel that starts sweet and roasty and finishes more fruity. Not bad but doesn’t hold up to the other barrel treatments.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle shared with the group (2012, notes). Pours dark brown/black in color with a thin beige head. The aroma is roasted malt, chocolate, light rum notes, butterscotch and dark fruit. The flavor is dark roasted malt, dark chocolate, light coffee, rum with dark fruits. The finish is dry with some black coffee bitterness and a slight earthy character. I’ve heard this has issues recently, but fresh this was good.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bomber to taster (shared by alexsdad06). Looks good; a dark and fairly opaque cola with tan lacing. Smells sweet with notes of rum and dark malt. Tastes like it smells with a solid mouthfeel. Good, not great.

3.7 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
22 oz bottle shared by Kan. Pours a rich blackish opaque, darker and a rich tannish head dies to a ring, laces small. Aromas are rich rum barrel, brown sugar and rum, lots of vanilla, spirit, and spice. Brown sugar, roast, and cocoa. Cookies, spice, and fruit cake. Spicy, rich aromas. Initial is medium bodied, a touch thinned overall with touches of cocoa, toffee, and biscuits. A touch soured into the middle and finish, lots of oak, vanilla, cherries offer tartnesds. Mellow sourness, more oak, vanilla, a creaminess, and a bit of harsh spirit. Weird beer overall, as the nose is so rich. Touches of spice, roast, cocoa. Toffee, vanilla, oak, and sour cherries. Finish is mellow spice and sweetness, oak, vanilla, more spice, and gentle sourness growing. A weird experience. Score is a bit inflated from aroma and appearance.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Sample at Jackie O’s 6th Anniversary Extravaganza on 12/3/11. Pitch black pour with no head. Aroma is rum, chocolate and roasted malt. Boozy rum character right up front, then it smoothes out a little to chocolate and slight sourness before a roasty and boozy rum finish.
