COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
On November 6, 2010 Jackie O’s released its first rum barrel aged beer, Oil of Aphrodite. The rum barrel that we received, imparted such a distinct and decadent character, I knew that we had to give that same barrel another fill. We have done this in the past with bourbon barrels and found that the bourbon character is very subtle and the oak flavors tend to be more pronounced. We crossed our fingers and filled the rum barrel with Dark Apparition, hoping to further harvest the amazing wealth of rum character that barrel had initially offered. I checked on it after it’s initial 3-month aging period, and was delighted to discover the same incredible flavors from the first fill. Most noticeable was the candied orange character, although not as strong, it was still an integral part of the beer. 30 Madagascar vanilla beans were added to the barrel. The beer and beans aged in the barrel for an additional 2 months before being bottled. Vanilla Bean Rum Barrel Dark Apparition is a beautiful beer that embodies many bold flavors and aromas without being over the top. Enjoy with friends and loved ones.

Bottle shared by Noodleuser. Poured a dark black color with a touch of tan on the edges. Artificial (or perhaps too-real) vanilla notes to it. Okay, but not what I had hoped. Rum brings out a slightly sour note to it that wasn’t as pleasant as I had hoped.

Bottle shared by Noodleuser: pours a barely transparent dark mahogany with a thin spotty-lacing off-white head. Has a sweet vanilla and rum raisin nose with a touch of dark chocolate. Starts with average fullness and light sweetness with good chocolate and dark fruity notes along with a touch of light tartness before a drier, semi-tart finish.

651mL thanks to noodleuser. Deep ruby pour looking black. Low carbonation, beige foam. Nose is black olive, strawberry, salt, tar. Taste is thin up front, some intense vanilla extract. Light acidity. Very watery for style. Disappointing.

Bottle. Vanilla, light rum, and chocolate malt aroma. Brown with moderate head. Bittersweet dark chocolate malt and ash flavor. Okay - didn’t get much vanilla though.

2011 bomber, #191/225. Poured inky black with very little going on head-wise. The aroma picked up sweet vanilla, milk chocolates, and nutty notes joined by a little vinous character.. more vanilla as it warmed up. The flavor found a hefty dose of vanilla throughout, mostly paired with sweet chocolate notes.. tangy oak and sweet rum on the edges.. tanginess paired well with rich chocolate and a bunch more vanilla on the finish. Medium-plus bodied and warm on the palate.. creamy and smooth across the middle.. too much vanilla going on, but otherwise a tasty brew.
