3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
On tap at the brewhouse. Big beer with jet black color and a small tan head. Aroma of coffee, chocolate, roasted barley, grain and doughy bread. Taste is heavy on the sweet side with chocolate being the overwhelming flavor along with coffee and earth notes. The finish is smooth with hint of bitterness. Creamy mouthful with a heavy body. Overall a good beer, but was expecting better.

4.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Very dark color and a persistent thin brown head. Rich deep aroma with lots of little nuances if u smell it long enough. Flavor is great, really good representation of a craft stout. The backbone of this beer is the malt so rich and deep. There is a definite alcohol burn and the hops are lost in all the flavor. Overall I love this beer had a sampler during brew week so far it’s my favorite.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
22 oz. bottle shared by bsuedekum- thanks, Blake! 2011 release, bottle 118/228. Pours a deep cocoa brown with a small tan ring for a head that lasts all the way down. Straightforward aroma- coffee, chocolate, earth, roast, and sugar. Simple and nice but doesn’t really pop. The flavor follows the same notes up front, with chocolate and coffee, but then finishes with a long metallic note, like someone put a coin in my taster. Medium-bodied, with light carbonation and a roasty, metallic mouthfeel. We lined this one up with 6 variations and this was probably my least favorite of the bunch.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
On tap. Had this after trying the vanilla and coffee versions. Of the three, the standard was definitely my favorite - had the best balance, naturally. Good, lighter brown head. Black color. Good lace. Nice roasty dark malt aroma, with light coffee / chocolate notes. Nice moderate bitter taste. Bigger body, lighter carbonation. Good stuff.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Tasted on draft at the 2011 12 South Winter Warmer. Pours nearly black with a thin tan head that leaves thin, spotty lace. The nose is roasted coffee, dark chocolate, and some banana. The flavor is lightly sweet with some sweet milk chocolate, moving to the more dark chocolate and coffee with a touch of banana. The body is full and oily with average carbonation and a long banana, dark chocolate, and bitter coffee finish.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
From notes. First reviewed 7/15/2011. Poured from a 22 oz. bottle into a tasting glass.
Dark Apparition is a good looking imperial stout - black with mahogany edges, with a creamy mocha cap.
The aroma is smooth. Roasted malt, coffee, cocoa, and dark chocolate all blend together.
Smooth Belgian chocolate comes into the flavor up front, with some dark fruit hangs out in the periphery. Eventually these flavors blending with espresso and roasted malt, which has a strong flavor without imparting any burnt flavors. The transition is a little choppy from the smooth coffee near the middle to the earthy hop bitterness and fusel alcohol finish.
This has low carbonation, but with a creamy smoothness that makes up for it. Definitely full bodied.
I liked this, but I did not love it. Sometime in the future I would be interested in going back and trying this along with several variations together.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
A deep dark stout with a very thin brown head, viscous and thick. In aroma, an interesting and complex herbaceous chocolate, briny qualities, coffee grinds, almost meaty. In mouth, a smooth chocolate with light acidic cherry blossoms, coffee grinds, viscous bodied, alcohol warmth, very nice. Bottle from Boutip, shared with GRM, Probstk and Ian, Dec. 2 2011.
