Draft at Jackie-O’s on opening weekend of Ohio Beer Week. Pours a dark brown, not opaque, with a small tan head. Notes of sour cherries, chocolate, earth, oak, toast, brown sugar, vanilla, bourbon, and some fruity funk. Medium-bodied, with a smooth, sour mouthfeel and modest carbonation. Sour stouts really aren’t my thing, but this one was good.

Draft at Jackie O’s. Pours dark brown to black in color with a small fine beige head. The aroma is chocolate, barrel notes, dark cherry that is both sweet and tart with some acidity and wild character. The flavor has dark chocolate, bourbon, wood, black cherry, tart, red wine, acidity; with everything working together nicely. No bottle share allowed me to enjoy more of these solid offerings than I did in the past.

Pours a dark dark brown with a deep tan head that goes away quickly. Aroma is so complex there is deep fruit and there is alcohol but comes through with bourbon and woody notes. Flavor is so complex, this beer is awesome, deep rich malt with complex fruits and earthy woody and it’s Bretty and funky and jut a great beer overall I love everything that is going on with this beer!

Growler… This beer rocks!… Pours pitch black with a tiny, creamy, khaki head with no staying power. The nose is a mélange of dark chocolate, bourbon, a hint of red wine, sour cherries and a faint nutty component. Full-bodied and oily with faint carbonation. The flavor is a swirl of sour cherries and burnt chocolate The acidic component is dominant here. Finishes tart, mildly burnt and moderately bitter. Thanks so much to darkguardian for sharing yet another world class beer with the south Florida crew!

Jackie o’s dark robustic. Growler thanks to Josh and brad... Pours a darker shade of deep stout with less intense edges and topped with a thin light khaki head tha quickly disperses... Aroma of bourbon barrel and a semi-sweet chocolate focus. Brett and cherries then come into play at the middle but smoothens out letting the stout breathe a touch... Flavors are more of the same with smoothe chocolate flavors upfront which eventually sours up on the backend. Silky somewhat full bodied overall with a lighter than medium level of carbonation that goes along well for what it is. Rather enjoyable for me even with not being a sour stout type of person.

Thanks to Wally for the growler! Pours a deep dark chocolate color with essentially no head. Chocolate, vanilla and a hint of cherry sourness on the nose. Light oak. Great bourbon barrel profile. The taste is a delicious blend of vanilla, grapes, cherries, figs and cocoa. Soured red wine tannins towards the finish. Body is smooth and creamy with light carbonation and light sourness throughout. Touch of booze on the finish. Nice weight to the body. Overall, this is a pretty awesome beer. I love the barrel aging and the sour red wine notes. Goes down easy.

On tap at the brewpub - Pours dark cola with a thin tan ring of head. Nose is red wine, cherries, and light roasty malt. Cherries dominate the taste, with chocolate notes and finishing with brown sugar and a long, chocolatey red wine flavors. Real smooth on the palate, with gentle, creamy carbonation. Fantastic.

Draft. Poured a black color with an average creamy brown head that mostly lasted with excellent lacing. Moderate to heavy toasted malt, chocolate, cherry and wood alcohol aroma. Medium to heavy toasted chocolate malt, nutty and dark sweet fruit flavor with a heavy dark cherry sweet & sour and small alcohol bite finish of moderate to long duration. Full body with a dry smooth texture and flat carbonation. This is a standout beer.

Identical in appearance to #2 except a little more head and carbonation on glass edges figs and cherries. Dry grape tannins. Bourbons Wow. Excellent level of tannins. More akin to a very dry an sweet Cabernet Sauvignon. Nice level of bourbon. Away dark cherries. Tart wild finish 50% carbonation. Medium body.

Sampler flight on tap at the brewpub (Athens, OH). Pours a rich opaque thicker blackish hue, dark and thick with bigger cakey dark brown head. Dies to a firm film that laces ok. Aromas are bretty, funk, sour cherries. Roasty, cocoa, bourbon spirit and vanilla, gentle oak presence come into the fold. Richer aromas, cherries and brett really strike a firm note. Initial is heavier end of medium bodied, offering firm tart cherries and funky cobwebby brett. Wet oak, spirit related heat, roast and toast, some cocoa hit the palate firmly as it starts to do some work. Sour cherries come in firmly, toasty, cocoa, some red wine and dark fruit elements. Middle is a bit thinner, funky as the heat and barrel elements strike the palate firmly. Very interesting, a touch hot with great cherry influence, firm barrel and growing heat. Roast, toast, coffee, and cocoa elements stay behind but do their part. Really interesting brew here.
