COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
In February of 2008, Jackie O’s decided to start experimenting with wild yeast and bacteria. The first experiment was Grand Wazoo. Three glass carboys were filled with our Imperial Raspberry Vanilla Porter "Black Betty" and allowed to rest for six months on various sour cultures. Over the years Grand Wazoo has evolved and is now aged in bourbon barrels with more raspberries added during the aging period. Grand Wazoo was the catalyst for our sour project and what is now more than half of our barrel aging program. In three years, three carboys turned into 20 barrels and counting and those same sour cultures are still going. Cheers to the brew that got it started and is hands down the most extreme beer Jackie O’s produces. Chill before serving, decant slowly to keep the raspberry sediment at bay, then allow to warm. Share with friends now or age in your cellar for future celebrations.

Brewer’s note: In 2011 Black Betty (imperial raspberry vanilla porter) was racked into a bourbon barrel with Brett B. The beer rested for 18 months, with raspberries added toward the end, producing batch 4 of Grand Wazoo

This 2011 batch was also bottled, with a count of 210.

22oz bottle shared with the group (2011 vintage, bottle 198/210). Pours brown with reddish highlights and a medium sized beige head. The aroma had tart berries, chocolate, bourbon, wood, vanilla with some acidity. The flavor had tart raspberries, acidity, chocolate, bourbon, vanilla and woody. I have also had this on draft at the brewpub and thought this held up pretty well.

22oz bottle, shared by alexsdad06. 2011 vintage, bottle 198/210. Dark brown red color. Hazy body, nice color. Minimal head. Great woody raspberry in the nose. Nice light vanilla in the flavor, works well with the raspberry. Kind of decadent. Bigger body. Light, smooth, crisp carbonation. Lightly sticky in the finish. Tart taste, some tannin, some sweet. Great fruit beer. The group didn’t seem to be big on this one, but I really enjoyed the combination of flavors here

Bomber to snifter (shared by alexsdad06). Looks good; a murky brown with thin beige lacing. Smells malty, tart, and funky. Tastes like it smells, only not as good or balanced, with an average mouthfeel. Alright.

Murky brown pour with a thin beige head. Lots of musty raspberry on the nose with underlining hints of oak. Fruit, chocolate, tannins, light acidity. hmmm
Earlier Rating: 4/30/2011 Total Score: 3.8
Murky brown pour with some red edges. Thin beige head. Aroma is fresh raspberry and vanilla. Light bakers chocolate, raspberry, wild yeast and vanilla. More raspberry, really fruity and very tart but not overly acidic. Very nice. Feeling nothing but "blessed relief" to have tried all the the draft versions of TGW

Bottle. Almost clear deep brown liquid with small light brown head. Aroma of red berries, wood, light buttery bourbon, blueberries, dark toffee and light baby corn. Taste is light sweet, light bitter and light sour with notes of raspberry, bourbon and dark toffee. Medium to full bodied with low to medium carbonation. Nice but weird.

22 oz. bottle via trade. 2011 vintage, bottle 56/210. Pours a murky dark brown with a little bit of amber highlights and a small beige head that quickly settles into a ring. Good blend of raspberry and bourbon barrel character; vanilla, caramel, and brown sugar sweetness, along with mild balsamic, plums, and raisins. Medium-bodied, with a funky, gritty mouthfeel and modest carbonation. Good sour, very mild and drinkable.
