COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Matriarch is our Double India Pale Ale. Our main house IPA is, Mystic Mama. When crafting our DIPA I knew it had to be the mother of all mamas, so I poured in the hops, increased the malt and added some sugar to boot, and named it the Matriarch. Originally brewed in 2009, this beer has evolved into one hoppy mutha! When consumed fresh, do not aged, there are huge mango, pineapple, and apricot notes that bombard your nostrils. Flavor follows suit with the aromas, and the bitterness is firm. If you are lucky we might even have a keg of the double dry hopped version on draft at special events.

22oz bottle, bottled on 11/30/09, courtesy of MrChopin. Hazy marmalade color with a thin ring of white foam that never quit goes away. Candied orange peel and toasted malt on the aroma, maybe a hint of pine also. Big herbal bitterness, slightly astringent and vegetal with a hint of toasted malts. I don’t think father time has been awesome to this beer, but all in all much better than I was expecting for a 5 month old DIPA.

Pours dark gold with white head and some lacing. Aroma of sweet tangerine...like the lifesaver. Taste is citrus (orange, grapefriut) hops. The Middle is bitter, followed quickly by pineapple and malty backbone. Excellent brew.

Tap, pours dark orange, very nice lacing. Aroma is heavy pine with tropical fruit hints, sweet caramel backbone. Taste is sweet caramel malt upfront then it goes to a mango pineapple mix then resiny pine that lingers. Another awesome one from jackie o’s.

Draft to snifter. Looks good; a fairly transparent deep orange with foamy off-white head that steadily dissipates into lacing. Smells solid; hoppy with a big sweet malty backbone. Tastes like it smells with an average mouthfeel. Good, not great.

On tap at Hops and Pie poured a clear orange amber with a lasting amber head. Aromas of bread, earthiness, grapefruit, peach and light melon. Palate was medium bodied and smooth with a dry finish. Flavors of biscuit, grapefruit, pine and light orange zest with a smooth dry lingering bitter finish.

Tasted on 4/28/12 with the Nashville and Knoxville crews at Curtis’ old house, big thanks to JR for bringing this one. Pours clear orange with an average off-white head that leaves average lace. The nose is sweet orange peel, some resin hops, and light caramel malt. The flavor is pretty much the same, a more malt-forward DIPA with sweet and bitter orange peel, a nice hit of bitterness, and caramel malt. The body is medium with average carbonation and a long orange peel and resin hops finish.
