4.1 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Vintage 2011 bottle, #31/206, shared by badnewsbeers. Opaque deep brown body, thin discontinuous brown head. Rich, dry nose with oak, rum, and cocoa, nutty/meaty and surprisingly delicate. Warming body with rum, oak, walnut, and alcohol fronting dry and dusty cocoa. Velvety, rich and dry. Subtle, complex, and very good.

Bottle to snifter (thanks Nate). Looks good; flat and viscous. Smells really good! Sweet and rummy! Tastes okay, but thinner than I expected. Diacetyl. Good beer though.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottle from Jeff - thanks! Black, nearly still pour with a small amount of tan foam hugging the edge of the glass. Aroma is rum, dry roast, light chocolate, toffee, some underlying sweetness both from the malt and candied sugar, and walnuts. Taste is rum up front mix with a dry roast and chocolate character followed by sweet malt and a focused melange of raisin, toffee, and perhaps plum through the finish. Very interesting balance between the rum, dry roast, and sweeter notes through the finish. Balanced and enjoyable.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle 74/192 shared by MrPickles...thanks Andy! - Dark purple pour with next to no head at all. Nose is red wine, brown sugar, and lots of toffee sweetness. Taste is sweet brown sugar, with a touch of heat and lots of dark bready malt. Big thick, slick body. Soft carbonation. Tasted this one blind and didnít get the rum at all. Interesting.

Big thanks to foofaa for bringing this one to Imminent Liquidation II. I have wanted to try this one for awhile now, glad to finally have the chance.
A - Pours jet black with a nice one and a half finger tall tan head leaving thin streaks of lace down most of the glass.
S - Smells of plenty of dark roast, warm rum, vanilla, coffee, chocolate and a surprising amount of walnuts for how much this beer has added to it. Grows a little spicier as it sits in the glass, most likely from the rum.
T - Starts off with some chocolaty sweetness and a bit of dark roasted malt slowly giving way to hints of walnuts, vanilla, coffee and plenty of spicy rum. Finish has some dry oak tannins and some sweet roast, not lingering on the pallet for very long.
M - Big body and flavors with moderate carbonation. The carb works very well with the flavors and while they are strong they donít overpower the pallet for very long.
O - I really liked the base of this one so I was looking forward to trying this treatment and it didnít disappoint. I look forward to trying some of the other ones in the future.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
From notes. First reviewed 7/15/2011. Poured from a 22 oz. bottle into a tasting glass.
This has the appearance of a typical imperial stout - nearly black with a creamy brown head that laces the glass a little bit.
Rum is an interesting treatment - it leaves some aromas I am not as familiar with. I do get base rum aroma, with dark fruits and roasted malt too.
Up front I get a bit of chocolate, molasses, anise, and smooth, fully roasted malt in the flavor. A pervasive rum flavor exists throughout each sip. A little bit of walnut and spice comes through as well. Toward the end a soft earthy, herbal hop presence adds some bitterness. The finish is sweet with one last blast of rum. I like that the flavor picks up the flavor of the rum without picking up a strange booziness.
The carbonation is medium in degree and quite smooth. The smooth, creamy nature of the beer pushes this higher.
The great mouthfeel pushes up the overall rating. This is not an experiment I would have tried, but it came out very nicely.

4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Pours dark thick oil with even less of a head than the regular. The aroma is unbelievable - butter rum so perfectly sweet on the palate with light earthy nut notes. The flavor of the rum is light sweet brown sugary booze, a lot less hotter than on top 6 months ago when it was fresh. The nutty malt notes blended with rum taste great, the Belgian candi sugar gets lost here from the rum notes, but thatís okay. The body is right on as well, not too thick at all, balanced just right.

At the Kernel. Big thanks to Brad from JackieOs for bringing a bottle over and a very big thanks to the Kernel crew for sharing and saving me some! Opaque dark brown beer, little tan head. Rich dark malt. A little coffee and a trace of vanilla. Lovely rum and raisin ice cream with rich dark rum and a perfect amount of peppery spice. A little wood. Finishes semi dry. A fantastic rum barrel beer!
