From notes. First reviewed 7/15/2011. Poured from a 22 oz. bottle into a tasting glass.
This has the appearance of a typical imperial stout - nearly black with a creamy brown head that laces the glass a little bit.
Rum is an interesting treatment - it leaves some aromas I am not as familiar with. I do get base rum aroma, with dark fruits and roasted malt too.
Up front I get a bit of chocolate, molasses, anise, and smooth, fully roasted malt in the flavor. A pervasive rum flavor exists throughout each sip. A little bit of walnut and spice comes through as well. Toward the end a soft earthy, herbal hop presence adds some bitterness. The finish is sweet with one last blast of rum. I like that the flavor picks up the flavor of the rum without picking up a strange booziness.
The carbonation is medium in degree and quite smooth. The smooth, creamy nature of the beer pushes this higher.
The great mouthfeel pushes up the overall rating. This is not an experiment I would have tried, but it came out very nicely.

Pours dark thick oil with even less of a head than the regular. The aroma is unbelievable - butter rum so perfectly sweet on the palate with light earthy nut notes. The flavor of the rum is light sweet brown sugary booze, a lot less hotter than on top 6 months ago when it was fresh. The nutty malt notes blended with rum taste great, the Belgian candi sugar gets lost here from the rum notes, but that’s okay. The body is right on as well, not too thick at all, balanced just right.

At the Kernel. Big thanks to Brad from JackieOs for bringing a bottle over and a very big thanks to the Kernel crew for sharing and saving me some! Opaque dark brown beer, little tan head. Rich dark malt. A little coffee and a trace of vanilla. Lovely rum and raisin ice cream with rich dark rum and a perfect amount of peppery spice. A little wood. Finishes semi dry. A fantastic rum barrel beer!

2011 #6 of 206...pours pitch black with ruby hues and a thin dark chocolate head. Aroma has some dark fruit, molasses, and burnt toffee...a hint of brown sugar and definite rum...boozy. Flavor has molasses and caramel...good roastiness...sweet rum notes and charred oak...some dark chocolate. Mouthfeel is full...oily...finish is very roasty and dry with dark chocolate and nuttiness...warming.

22 oz. bottle shared by bsuedekum- thanks again, Blake! 2011 bottle #171/206. Pours a deep, dark opaque brown with a tiny dark tan ring. Aroma of vanilla, butterscotch, milk chocolate, rum, oak, and cream. Flavor of vanilla, toffee, chocolate, rum, oak, roasted malts, cream, and milk sugar. Medium-bodied, with a smooth, sweet, creamy mouthfeel and low carbonation. Really nice and smooth. Goes down too easy.

11’ Bottle# 171/206. Pours very black with a light tan ring for a head. Aroma is Rum, dark fruits and dark chocolate. Flavor is Rum, dark chocolate, oak/wood and walnuts. Nice creamy smooth finish. A bit of rum in the finish as well. Medium bodied with moderate carbonation.

2011 bomber, #31/192. Poured inky black with an almost equally dark brown head. The aroma picked up a lovely bouquet of dark malts, with dark chocolate, espresso, rum, and dark fruits, with vanilla and peppery accents.. a little metallic barrel around there too.. Loved it! The flavor found near-burnt dark chocolates, raisins, and vinous notes at the core, with peppery rum, charred oak, and walnuts laced throughout.. more sour and delightfully dry on the very long finish. Heavy-bodied with low carbonation on the palate.. the rum, rich malts, and barrel worked great together!

Bottle from beace. Cool label. Nice pour, black in color, ok head. Nice nose as well, I picked up lots of vanilla, roasted malts. Taste is different from the nose though. Its a creamy smooth well balanced impy stout. Roasted malts, nuts, dark chocolate and dark fruits. The alcohol is well hidden. Very drinkable. Overall: Nice Stout. Thanks Brad!

Bottle shared at the Coffee District. Dark brown/black pour with faint light brown head. Sweet/fruity rum aromas. Like all Jackie O’s stouts, the body is just a little thin and watery for my taste. I found it to be muddled (one of the group has had this before and believes there might be an infection) with rum, nutty/earthy notes and burnt roasted malt flavors....

Draft sample at JO’s. Poured a black color with a small fizzy brown head that diminished slowly with fair lacing. Moderate to heavy roasted dark nuts, rum, woody and alcohol aroma. Heavy bittersweet roasted nutty and rum flavor with a heavy bittersweet and small alcohol bite finish of long duration. Full body with a smooth texture and flat carbonation. This is a standout beer.
