In 2009, Black Betty (imperial raspberry vanilla porter) was racked into a bourbon barrel with Brett B. The beer rested for 9 months, with raspberries added toward the end.

On tap at the spot. This vintage was my favorite sampled during the vertical. Murky brown pour. Lingering beige head and spotty lace. Aroma is roast, lacto and vanilla. Probaly the most sour of the vintages and probably the nicest looking from a visual standpoint

Sample at One Funky Afternoon at Jackie O’s on 04/02/2011: The beer pours a murky dark reddish-brown color with a medium light beige head that recedes steadily. Spotty lacing on the glass. Tart berries in the nose along with some sweet malt. Medium to full body with a smooth texture and a slightly sour raspberry character. Flavors of yeast and oak as well. The finish is oaky with fruity esters lingering awhile. Good beer overall.

Growler shared by kramer @ BCTC’09, he hooked the place up. I liked this a lot, much more so than the other Jackie-Os sour. Color is dark brown, almost black. Has a small tan head. Aroma is strong tart berry sour, a cool chocolate aspect, and a tart light vinegar to round it off. Flavor is a candied sourness with tart berries sprinkled throughout. Has a nice mouthfeel to go along with all of that. I had no idea beforehand that this had raspberries in it but that makes perfect sense with what I tasted.

Growler at BCTC. Pours a hazy brown with ruby highlights and a thin white head. Caramel, oak, and some sour hints and a light berry character. Very tangy and with some nice light acidity. Finishes with a lovely lingering sourness.

Sampled during One Funky Afternoon on 4/2/11. Hazy brown pour with a thin beige head. Nose of raspberry sorbet and bourbon. Raspberry flavor with dark malts and some vanilla with bourbon. Tastes very similar to the 2010 version. Maybe a hair better, making it the best of the 4 vintages sampled.

This poured a reddish murky brown color with a very small beige head. Aroma was of lots of tart raspberries, some chocolatey roasted malt, and a good amount of brett. Flavor was soft sour raspberries and brett, but very well balanced on all layers.

7/13/2009: Jackie-O’s did a really nice job with Grand Wazoo Batch 2 (Bourbon Barrel-aged sour dark ale with raspberries). It has a very similar dark appearance (dak brown with a creamy tan-colored head) and base beer as the Jackie-Os Chunga’s Old Bruin. However, the aroma of this beer is sour black raspberry and the flavor isn’t quite as sour. Instead, the fresh red raspberry sweetness blended so nicely with the base beer to bring forth som wonderfully caramelized malt flavors. This beer is very balanced and very flavorful. It is medium bodied and dangerously easy to drink. The extra hint of sweetness really makes this my kind of sour!

Snifter (draught) at Jackie O’s Pub & Brewery in Athens, Ohio during Ohio Brew Week 2009. Rating #1 for this beer.

Growler at BCTC 2009: Muddy deep brownish purple with a light tna dense head. Tart fruity aroma with evident berry character- some earthier notes of tobacco and oak tannins. Slick feel- mildly acetic flavor with a toasted earthy malt character. Has notes of dark berries and tobacco. Somewhat complex and unique. A well done Sour.

Aroma is sour, tart, fruity, mixed berries and some wood. Very acidic, flavor is tart and some fruit sweetness with some pricklyness and wood. Really nice and sour with good flavor overall.

Draft at One Funky afternoon 2011. Pours a cloudy brown color with a thin beige head. The aroma has tart raspberry puree, mild bourbon notes, oak and a hint of the sweetness to come. The flavor opens with tartness bordering on sour, but becomes increasingly sweet toward the finish. Raspberries and dark fruits, bourbon, oak, dark malts combine for another interesting Jackie O’s beer. I didn’t have batch 3 on the same day, but the notes seem very similar.
