COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Smoked coffee black lager.
Cloaked in mystery, this black lager was aged with specially roasted coffee from Barismo. The use of a small percentage of traditional Beechwood smoked malt adds complexity and balances the liberal use of chocolate malt. Notes of roasted grains, beechwood smoke, and coffee accompany a full bodied and sweet chocolaty malt character. Smoke & Dagger uses locally grown unmalted barley from MA.
August 2013 release, only available at the brewery and at Red Barn Coffee.

Draft at the brewery, great aroma roasted grains, deep ground earthy coffee and yeast. Flavor is a perfect copy of the aroma. Coffee is earthy, toasty and flavorful. Body is medium with a nice ashy feel. Damn fine.

Poured from growler into a snifter: Pours dirty water brown with almost no head. Aroma of coffee, smoke, and roasted malts. Taste is mildly sweet with lots of coffee and a nice touch of smoke. Medium body, smooth mouthfeel, nice beer.

Sampled this at Tap and Mallet total tap takeover. Pours an dark brown with a medium tan head. The aroma has nice roastiness and a slightly sweet dark chocolate and smokiness. The flavor steps up the smokiness and this cuts down on the chocolatey sweetness. The mouthfeel is medium and the finish is roasty lingering to mild smoke and coffee. Same as Smoke and Dagger, but with coffee.

Bottle. The pour is dark. The aroma is mostly malt with coffee notes. The taste is solid, good coffee. A little thin overall. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Sample at bar in Boston. The best thing is the looks. Black brown with thick foam. Taste is too much dark sugars/molasses. Asking it too sweet. More malt bitterness would probably make it more balanced

Sampled at esbls. A smokey nose and flavor. A bit of fruit. Thin feel. Not enough going on.

.5 liter bottle. It pours a nice dark brown color with lots of streaming bubbles and a rather thick off white head. The aroma is pretty strong with coffee, smoke and a light savory note backed up by some chocolate malt. The flavor is very roasted with subdued smoke and coffee notes, but in balance with one another. The body is pretty light but satisfying enough. It finishes with some burnt toast, coffee and chocolate. Not terribly exciting, but still a very nice black lager.
