Fire in the Ham Caution! This is an intensely smokey lager similar to those found in Bamberg, Germany. Most of this brewís malt was dried over flaming beechwood, which ingrains unique smokey flavors. Aromas of campfires, smoked ham, and bacon dominate a soft malt and hop backbone. Although hard to believe, this beer is vegan friendly. OG 13 Plato / IBUs 20 / ABV 5.4%

This was on tap at Growler Garage. This was poured into a tulip (eh, donít ask me why the place canít pour lagers into lager glasses, whatever, hereís the rest). The appearance was a slight bronzed yellow color with a bar pourís kind of slim white head that dissipated pretty quickly. The smell had bacon, a light layer of smokiness, subtle ham and a light little bit of breadiness underneath. The taste was basically the same: roasty, smoky with a subtle sweet underneath. The aftertaste was moderately smoky with the breadiness balancing in it. Thereís a slight quick smoky finish. On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium on the body with a subtle crisp to mostly smokey ham to bacon feel hitting my tongue. Barely any bitterness, but understandable and actually really nice to me. Overall, Iíd say this was a nice rauchbier or maybe "smoked" beer. Iíd have again for me at least.

Smokey aroma for sure. Heavy smoke and lager character, and that is all. Not for everyone thatís for sure. Big head from pour.

Scopey (9790) - Croydon, Greater London, ENGLAND - SEP 25, 2015
Tap at the brewery. It pours clear yellow with a medium white head. The nose is fresh, rich smoked malt, very meaty and bread. The taste is crisp, rich smoke, smooth, creaminess, bread, smoked cheddar and cracker with a dry finish. Medium body and moderate, foamy carbonation. Pretty alright smoked lager.

Pours orange with a white head. Aroma is ham and sausage and malt. Taste is smoky and a little sweet. Smoke is everywhere. The smoke is good. The beer is good. I like it.

500ml bottle pours clear rusty amber with small finger of head. Nose is pretty much straight smoke, toasty grain, creamed corn, light hay spice, some round fruit. Taste is dominated by smokey grain, some round bitter apple sauce fruit, potato, light crust, corn, meats. Finishes mostly dry, lingering smoke, creamed corn chowder, some bready toast, some bitterness and grain. Not unpleasant but pretty one note, probably donít need to revist this.

Bottle: Super cloudy, toasted golden color. Soapy khaki-tinted head that fades to a collar quickly. Aroma of peated mats, lightly meaty smoke, faint bacon, salt, some toasted cereal grains. Taste is less meaty & more just smoke heavy. Liquid smoke, peat, mild campfire, toasted grain, pale malt, straw, a touch of grassiness. Mild char towards the finish. Light-medium bodied. A little subdued over all but still pretty nice.

Taster from Tap at the brewery. Clear, bright golden color. Nose of smoked ham, brown sugar added and baked. Very smoky flavor, ham, lightly malty, great balance. A well done version of a pale and smoky beer where the smoke flavors can stand out.
