On draft at the brewery, very light pepper flavors, lighter than peppercorns. Lushawn likes this more than me. I like almond joy

Pours a dark brown almost black with some off white head. Smells of smoke and roasted coffee and tastes of various spices and a lil smoke

500 ml bottles poured into a Kuhnhenn tulip. Pours pitch black in color with maybe a half fingers worth of white head. Nose is primarily comprised of smoke, malt, and just the faintest amount of pepper. The flavor follows the nose in that it is mainly smoke with a touch of pepper and oak. The mouthfeel is light to moderate with good carbonation and a moderate finish. For how this good originally sounded, I am pretty disappointed with this beer. In my opinion, there isn’t a whole lot here to differentiate it from normal Smoke and Dagger.

500ml bottle in a tulip. Pours very dark brown with a lacy, beige head. Aroma of lightly smoked malts, some roast/coffee, a little pepper, and light oak. Flavor a nice blend of everything. Average texture. A pretty good beer, but could be spicier and stronger on all of the flavors.

Sampled at Julios New England Craft Beer Fest. Another good one from JA. Smoke and Dagger is truly a great beer and I’m loving all these variations. The pepper definitely works here.

500mL thanks to WillRunForBeer. Pours clear, deep cola brown. Thick, grayish lacing. Good retention. Nose is richer chai tea, fresh ginger, no pepper or smoke. Taste has some body, still a bit light bodied though. Nice chai tea, candied ginger. Nice quenching body. Clean. Big upgrade from the normal version.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle thanks to WillRunForBeer. Aroma is smooth sweet peppercorn, molasses, and slight roast. Pours ugly light black with a silky smooth white head. Taste is smoke forward with a good malty roast. Peppercorn follows with great black pepper and licorice notes. Great smokey malt finish. Goes down nice and easy greasy. Very enjoyable variant of the Smoke and Dagger.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
500 ml bottle thanks to WillRunForBeer. Pours black with a very small head that quickly fades to a small ring. Interesting aroma of cured ham, Szechuan pepper, peat smoke, and very light chocolate. Light sweetness in the taste. Bacon, ham, and Szechuan mostly. Really like the taste but the body is ultra thin and a little watery. Went down really easy with just the slightest amount of pepper heat.

I poured the full half-liter into a nice pilsner glass. Had a nice malty-hued 2" head, which settled quickly. The color is a deep brown, amber at the edges. I’ve had more than a few S&D’s, including several variations, and the nose here is all Szechuan Pepper with very subtle undertones of the roasty malts and smoked malts normally associated with S&D. Not as carbonated as most JA bottles, but the mouthfeel is soft and inviting. The flavors seem to scatter to the front and sides of the tongue (much like a Guinness Draught), leaving a clean center palate for the spice to settle in to. Unfortunately, it doesn’t. The spice here is cultured - just hints, no heat. I was hoping for the spice of the Habanero Sculpin, with the slow build up to the beading sweat. An enjoyable quaffer, but missing some of my favorite qualities from the original S&D (full rounded body, big, rich maltiness), and failing to replace them with anything unique or eye-popping. I would have another, certainly, but won’t go out of my way to find it.

(Critique chaotique du extreme beer fest 2013): Un mélange de poivre vert et de thé dans un corps beaucoup trop mince.
