Dark dark brown with lasting dense tan head and lace. Smoky grassy leafy wet earth bitter chocolate aroma. Smooth fairly rich woody chocolate smoky with mild clean grassy finish. Smooth and rich for for the abv. Lingering smoke. Delicious. From my old home town, too.

bought a 4 pack of half liter bottles. my first try of Jack’s abby offering. Color is black with showing more brown in the light. less than a finger of a off white head. aroma hits with some mild smoke as wlel as some bitter chocolate. Taste is roasty and maltly but there is a finish that lets you know you are having a lager. a classic example of how a dark beer can be refreshing and light bodied in the palate. recommended.

Poured into a perfect pint. Big thanks to Dope for this.
4.0 A: Deep brown/black color. Three fingers of frothy tan head. Retention is good and moderate amounts of lacing is left.
4.5 S: Wonderful wonderful smokiness. Two parts campfire and one part porcine. Supple, mild roastiness to accompany. Grainy, sweet maltiness underneath.
4.0 T: Less smoke than the nose suggests, but still enough to please and overwhelmingly campfirery. Grainy, roasty, and clean. Soft, supple roast. Well crafted with no signs of any off flavors.
3.5 M: Lighter medium body. Good carbonation, but toward the upper end of the spectrum. Very lightly creamy. Infinitely smooth.
4.0 D: Solid beer with a great nose and taste. Super drinkable and well rounded.

Bottle. My first beer from them and I’m impressed by the quality and intent. It’s dark apoque brown with a nice tan foamy head that lasts. The aroma is mostly chocolate malt with a comforting barley tea finish. Smoke is not so much present until the taste and lasts into the finish on the palate after . It’s a little cloyingly sweet which might be my only issue. The mouthfeel is impressively light, fresh, and fluffy. Would rather drink this than the vast majority of German beers by the time they make it here.

Tap: Poured a dark black color ale with a dark brown foamy head with good retention and some light lacing. Aroma of light roasted malt with light smoke notes and some dry black chocolate. Taste is an interesting mix between black chocolate and smoke with light lactose notes. Body is slightly fuller then average with medium carbonation which suits the style. Well brewed and somewhat unique. I would love to have a more regular access to this beer.

(500 ml from Grain and Vine) Dark brown, small tan head. Nose of toasty caramel and chocolate. Mouthfeel very smooth and full. Flavor of toasty sweet roasted caramel-chocolate. Stretch to call this a smoked, but it’s a really good schwarzbier.

A dark ruby black brew - light tan head. Light smoky aromas. Flavor is light smoke and dark malts. Good balance. Lighter in body than a smoked porter, but still very satisfying. Not overly sweet. Lasting roastiness.

Pours dark chestnut in color unclear with a nice dark tan head. The aroma is light sweet malts and a bit of pleasant mesquite smoke. The flavor is similar, light smoky notes with a nutty malty backbone on a medium body.

growler... dark brown beer, center even more so, tan head... quick an impressive aroma, smoke, light ham, roast, a bit of chocolate, nice balance... the taste isn’t as good, loses a lot of the smoke, becomes a bit watery and boring... others enjoyed much more but a solid rauch
