Cloaked in mystery, this dark black beer skirts the line between a schwarzbier and smoked porter. The use of a small percentage of traditional Beechwood smoked malt adds complexity and balances the liberal use of chocolate malt. Notes of roasted grains, beechwood smoke and coffee accompany a full bodied and sweet chocolatey malt character. Smoke & Dagger uses locally sourced ingredients. OG 14.5 Plato

UPDATED: NOV 30, 2013 Super enjoyable. This beer offers complexity, but not too much of anything. Not too much smoke, not too much sweetness, not too much bitter. Very well balanced and super sessionable.

Tap pours clear ruby black, large creamy tan head, great lacing. Aroma is smokey, coffee, ashtray. Flavor follows, light sweet light bitter, light acidity. Full body, creamy.

Pours a beautiful dark brown. Burnt walnut with some ruby hues and a dark caramel. The colors are soft and pleasing. The beer has excellent clarity and if you look deeply you can see light lager bubbles rising. Fat finger and a half of tan creamy foam that fell slowly and leaves a sheet of wet lace to slid back down into the glass on each sip. The nose is light smoke and roasted grain. A bit of coffee and smooth chocolate. It has a malt sweetness underneath but it stays true to a lager scent. Smells a lot like a schwarzbier. The taste is perfect lightness. The smoke doesn’t overpower the roasted grains which are sturdy but not burned. The coffee and chocolate stay smooth and well blended. The body is thin but the taste is full. The malt does not get sweet nor does the chocolate and the taste of the almost blackened grain is truly spectacular.

This is a fantastic beer that is lighter than you might expect and yet still has all the beechwood smoke flavor you want. It is a roasted malt paradise for the eyes and for the palate. The full bodied taste is not heavy and the mouthfeel is silky and smooth. There is a touch of hop floral on it that livens the dark flavors but doesn’t compete with them. It has the faintest touch of fruit. Another great beer from Jack’s Abby.

500ml bottle (dated 7/12/13) pours dark brown with nice creamy finger of head. Can just barely see through the edges of the glass. Nose is roasty dark fruit, a liitle chocolate. Mouthfeel is light but held up by nice crisp carbonation and a creamy malt finish. Taste is a balanced smokiness up front which transitions into a roasty chocolate, creamy coffee, with some bits of fruit mixed in. Finish is mild fruitiness, ashy, dark cherries, a touch of smoke. This is really good.

Was $6 at Three Penny. To pint, it pours a syrupy burnt mauve sustaining a trim beige ringed head barely a fingernail in length. Aromas of Maine sea salt, autumnal leaves, molasses, Karo, and semi-sweet chocolate chips. Taste the same only the addition of a black current bite at finish. I should’ve just bought a single bottle in MA. At Leary’s it costs less than $4. I feel stupid right now. Oh, well.

500mL thanks to WillRunForBeer. Clear, deep cola pour looking black. Medium, whiter gray foam with okay retention and spotty lacing. Nose is cola and mild pine. Taste is soapy, ashy, soil, mild smoke. Palate is very watery, thin, soil/ash. Disappointing.

Draft at pizza plant. Dark near black pour with a thin light brown head that laces down. Smokey roasted malt in the nose. Taste is woody smoke, earthy, dark chocolate, bittersweet finish.
