Cloaked in mystery, this dark black beer skirts the line between a schwarzbier and smoked porter. The use of a small percentage of traditional Beechwood smoked malt adds complexity and balances the liberal use of chocolate malt. Notes of roasted grains, beechwood smoke and coffee accompany a full bodied and sweet chocolatey malt character. Smoke & Dagger uses locally sourced ingredients. OG 14.5 Plato

On tap at Parker Pie. Pours dark brown with low light beige head. Aroma is of caramel, roasted malt, smoke. Taste is of roasted malt, caramel, fruits, slight smoke. Palate: Light body. Good balance. Overall: Good. Smoke is not overdone: I appreciate this.

500 ml bottle thanks to lukaduke. Poured into a brandy snifter. Pours a darker ruby with a beige head of foam. Decent retention. The aroma is mildly meaty and sweet. Doesn’t have that big robust bacon persona I’ve become accustomed to in smoked beers. More a umami quality. Taste is sweet. Pretty good mild smoke beer.

Pours a deep roasty umber color with a couple fingers of khaki foam. The nose is light smoked chocolate, touch of rootbeer and spent coffee grain. The palate really does run down the line between porter and schwarzbier... smooth silky body with touch of herbal rootbeer sweetness, bakers chocolate, smoked seaweed, and roasted grain. Really easy drinker yet complex and very nicely balanced in between the two styles.

GBBF Day 1. Hazy dark amber - red - brown beer. Small pale tan head. Palate is smooth and light, semi dry. Smooth malt with a mild dark chocolate streak. Whisper of smoke. Very fine minerally carbonation. Touch of dark fruits before a smooth and dry finish. Not bad at all.

Cask at GBBF 2013. It pours darkest brown with a medium beige head. The nose is earth, smoke, honey-glazed ham, treacle, light cocoa and faint medicinal notes. The taste is smooth, roasty, bitter-sweet, smoke, earth, treacle, brown sugar and cola with a dry, sweetish finish. Medium body and fine carbonation. Well-balanced and rather drinkable.

Trade bottle into a snifter. Smoke smoke and more smoke here. Competes well with Surly Smoke.

Cask at gbbf 2013. Hazed caramel colour halo of light tan head. Aroma is mapel sausage and light smoke. Sweetish. Brown malt flavour some mapel and roast in the finish. OK but a bit weird.

Fresh bottle shared with some friends. Poured clearish brown with light head and minimal lace. Light smokey profile with clean malt, wood, nuts and milk chocolate. Not that hoppy at all for Jack’s. A tad bit bitter in finish with a mix of cashews and cocoa. Nice.

UPDATED: AUG 6, 2013 Pours deep black with a big tan head that fades to just a skin. Nice aroma of chocolate and alcohol. Sweet chocolate malts really dominate the flavor here with a tiny bit of smoke. The smokiness really comes through as a greasy aftertaste, it’s a bit like smelling a campfire the morning after. The aftertaste also hosts a hint of hop bitterness, otherwise very little hoppiness here. Given the smoked beer category here on RB and the fact that smoke is in the name I was hoping for a bit more smokiness, but this is still a tasty dark lager! $2.99 at the big Walgreens downtown.
