Cloaked in mystery, this dark black beer skirts the line between a schwarzbier and smoked porter. The use of a small percentage of traditional Beechwood smoked malt adds complexity and balances the liberal use of chocolate malt. Notes of roasted grains, beechwood smoke and coffee accompany a full bodied and sweet chocolatey malt character. Smoke & Dagger uses locally sourced ingredients. OG 14.5 Plato

500 ml bottle from secret Santa. Thanks. Pours a dark brown, nearly black, color with a medium clumpy beige head that has fair retention. The aroma features smoke, rock candy, faint chocolates and something I cant identify. The taste is light smoke, roasted grains and a bit of dark bitter chocolate. The palate is full for a lager and the carbonation is lively. Finishes medium in duration and dry with a bit of astringency. Overall: Very nice and tasty, but I thought the smoke was too light and subtle, I prefer more in your face smoke character. Thrilled to finally try a beer from this brewer. Thanks again Santa.

Bottle and tap. Strange brew in that the more times I’ve had it the more I like it. Seemed too smokey at first but I’ve bought it several times. Has a good hop kick, slight chocolate overtones, pours a dark brownish black with small light brown head

500ml bottle, thanks to Mike L. Shared with the group. Bottled 4/01/2013. Labeled 5.8%. Mostly clear brown red color. Thin khaki head, spread of dotty lace. Nice smokey malt flavor. Medium to bigger body, good smooth crisp carbonation. Light savory, moderate sweet, light bitter taste. Good chocolate malt, subtle coffee aroma. A good.. whatever this is supposed to be.. Nice complex big malt aroma to it. I like the big smoke, little sweet, though

500 ml bottle shared by DrSilverworm- thanks again, Chris! Pours an amber-brown color with an off-white head. Aroma of smoke, brown sugar, cola, chocolate, and nuts. Flavor is the same. Light-bodied, with medium carbonation and a dry, earthy mouthfeel. Solid smoked dark lager.

.5L bottle to snifter (thanks DrSilverworm). Looks good for the style; a semi-transparent brown with off-white lacing. Smells of dark malt and light smoke. Tastes like it smells with some roast too. Good on the palate. Enjoyable.

Bottle split at Tony’s, from the Beer Shop LTD, 19/05/13. Very dark mahoogny brown with a thin beige head that clears to the edge and leaves a film. Nose is dark malt, light smoke, brown sugars, light shades of maple syrup. Taste comprises dark malt, touch of sugar, woody notes, smoke, some chocolate, maple syrup. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, dry finish. Decent enough smoked lager.

The smoke is apparent but not overwhelming. The look over all is of dark cola minus the bubbles. Pretty straightforward compaired to some American contemporaries. Very close to Sprecher’s black lager with bit more malt.

This is a smokey SOB, but has the black lager chops to back up the roast. Sweet chocolate malts to follow. Dark brown with a two finger tan head that lasts for awhile. Tastes of smoked meats and cocoa. If you have ever had chocolate covered bacon, and I suggest you do, this beer will take you right back there. Thick and creamy while retaining a crisp lager profile. It will fill you up, and is a match for grilled tips and even smoked sausage or turkey and the like. This local phenom has my attention already, and this one really dials it up.

Aroma of chocolate, meat, and lager yeast. Pours black with a fizzy white head. Taste is super pleasant with burnt meat, bacon, chocolate, and a nice lager skunk. Super enjoyable. Could drink this all day.

Bottle - Pours murky cola brown with a thin tan head. Nose is chocolate malt, subtle dry smoke, and a real light cherry sweetness. The taste is really drinkable, with light smokiness, a bit of dark cherry, more chocolatey malt, and a dry, roasty bitter finish. Smooth and soft in the mouth, with just enough carbonation. Really easy drinking, smooth and quenching. Excellent.
