3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle (500 ml). From reynolds314, thanks Matt! Black with a medium quickly diminishing off-white head and some lacing. Aroma is of subtle smoked malt, roasted malt and slight chocolate. Taste is slightly sweet with grains, roasted malt and, again, subtle smoked malt notes along with chocolate. Mouthfeel is dry. Medium body. Interesting beer, but not outstanding.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Draft @ Ward Eight, Lowell MA. 10 oz. mug shows deep brown in a poorly lit bar. Thin tan head some lace. Chocolate, light grain and subtle smoke. Flavor follows the nose with some coffee ground and caramel notes as well. I’m really glad the smoke is subtle. Texture is kind of sticky, light syrup. The body is exactly as it should be for a dark lager. This brewer pulled off a tuff thing to do for me. A smoked beer that I enjoyed drinking. Well done Gents!!

3.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20
Very dark brown pour with a creamy tan head. Aroma is roasty, smokey and has a little bit of chocolate. Medium bodied, smooth and creamy. Peaty/smoky up front with a bit of chocolate and wood on the back end. Pleasant finish, a little lingering smoke. Smoke beers are hit or miss. I don’t like them when they are obnoxiously smoky. This one is a hit, great body, good flavor and just enough smoke to make it different.

Tap. Very smokey. It had a bit of a charred aftertaste. Not bad for a smoked beer, but this isn’t my favorite style.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle @ home via trade with Ernesto987. Thanks! Pours a hazy dark brown appearance with a nice brown head. Mild dark fruity (plum, fig), light leather, slightly burnt/smoky, nutty caramel, grassy aroma. Somewhat sweet caramel malty, toasty, a bit burnt, lightly smoked, chocolate, a bit nutty flavor. The smoke is very slight but the beer is overall pretty solid.

4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Good shit. 500mL bottle poured into a plastic cup at a hotel room while I watch Mark Wahlberg in Contraband, which pairs well with the beer. Despite all this the beer looks good. It pours with a medium thick head that leaves behind a slug of lacing. The beer, well, its almost a perfect melding of schwarz and rauch, equal parts represented without either dominating. The shwarz has a great chocolate lagered aspect and a smoked element that is present but nicely subdued into the black lager. Super clean with no flaws and so damn quaffable, I drank this up like it was nothing in a few minutes. I only picked up a single but I see why these are sold in 4 packs that were priced for $10.50, which seems like a great price point for such quality.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Pours with a four-finger, khaki head that fades slowly leaving some lace. Black color, hints of mahogany highlights. Light-medium carbonation and medium bodied. Nose is light smoke and chocolate and flavor is smooth baked chocolate with hints of smoke. $3.50 for a 500ml bottle, from Giles Fine Wine Arlington, MA.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Pint.9 into a glass. the head is exceptional, as it resides like a firm pillow spring mattress protecting the brew, but you know once you lay into it the results will be comforting and relaxing. Head is brownish white. Body is midnight black. The lager of this brew shades it away from resembaling a porter, but it certainly resembles one. The taste is smoke wood chips, malty grains and dried chocolate. Drinkability is fair, but a bit dry and boring at times as the flare of this brew seems to wear itself out soon after indulgence. But the flow is the smoked black lager is danity and the color remains mesmerizing.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Location: Bottle at Paul’s Blind Impy Stout Tasting, 1/5/13
Aroma: The nose is fairly smokey with some roasted and burnt malts as well
Appearance: It pours a dark brown color with a brown head and some spotty lace
Flavor: On target with what you’d expect from the nose, smoke, some roast and light sweetness
Palate: The body is medium (leaning a drop toward full), with a fairly decent mouthfeel
This is the first beer I have rated/tried from Jack’s Abby. I thought this was a plenty solid smoked lager. It is worth trying for sure.
