Cloaked in mystery, this dark black beer skirts the line between a schwarzbier and smoked porter. The use of a small percentage of traditional Beechwood smoked malt adds complexity and balances the liberal use of chocolate malt. Notes of roasted grains, beechwood smoke and coffee accompany a full bodied and sweet chocolatey malt character. Smoke & Dagger uses locally sourced ingredients. OG 14.5 Plato

Was $6 at Three Penny. To pint, it pours a syrupy burnt mauve sustaining a trim beige ringed head barely a fingernail in length. Aromas of Maine sea salt, autumnal leaves, molasses, Karo, and semi-sweet chocolate chips. Taste the same only the addition of a black current bite at finish. I should’ve just bought a single bottle in MA. At Leary’s it costs less than $4. I feel stupid right now. Oh, well.

Bottle. Pours a dark reddish brown, near black with a foamy, lasting tan head. Aromas of smoke, dark fruit, grain, and chocolate. Flavor is sweet with smoke, light chocolate and malt. Light bodied, light carbonation.

500mL thanks to WillRunForBeer. Clear, deep cola pour looking black. Medium, whiter gray foam with okay retention and spotty lacing. Nose is cola and mild pine. Taste is soapy, ashy, soil, mild smoke. Palate is very watery, thin, soil/ash. Disappointing.

Draft at pizza plant. Dark near black pour with a thin light brown head that laces down. Smokey roasted malt in the nose. Taste is woody smoke, earthy, dark chocolate, bittersweet finish.

Very good smoked, on tap at Cole’s. Dark brown and lace. Above average mouthfeel. A good malting and very drinkable.

on tap at parker pie. clear dark brown, red tint, with a small light beige head, some retention and lacing. roasted and nutty malts, some smoked malts, shy fruitiness - maybe a tad too much chocolate over it, chalkiness and minerals, grass. average carbonation, light body, relatively dry grassy-peppery-lightly smoky finish. nice.

Tap at Parker Pie. Pours black (or maybe dark brown) with a brown-ish head that disappears but leave some lacing. Aroma is indeed smoky, roasty. Taste is chocolatey with again some roasted malt notes (not overpowering). Carbonation is again too high, Parker Pie needs to fix this. Overall a really nice smoked lager, though.

500 ml bottle thanks to lukaduke. Poured into a brandy snifter. Pours a darker ruby with a beige head of foam. Decent retention. The aroma is mildly meaty and sweet. Doesn’t have that big robust bacon persona I’ve become accustomed to in smoked beers. More a umami quality. Taste is sweet. Pretty good mild smoke beer.
