4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 14/20
There’s no mystery in this one. Smoked from start to finish, but done well and done right. It’s what a black lager should be.

Bottle at Paul’s for the Blind Stout tasting. Pours a light brown amber with a thin white head. Big smoke on the nose with crisp grain behind it. Soft smoke, caramel and a bit of graininess. Tasty and nice with a light bit of smoke.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Pour was a dark brown, red tints, with a thick two finger tan head that fell to a thin layer, larger bubbles clinging to glass. Aroma was a whiff of smokey goodness, not too much else, maybe a hint of malt sweetness. Taste was nicely balanced between smokiness, some malt character, some hints of dark sweet chocolate, maybe a but if caramel. Well balanced, nothing dominates. I am glad that this was not so over the top with aggressive smoke and roasted malts. Nicely carbonated, just enough tingle to clean it all up. Very pleased with this brew...not heavy or overdone, drinkable.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
500ml bottle once again thanks to the lu for these bottles... pours a deeper than cola black hued consistency leaving the sides a little less dark than the rest. a thin to medium that eventually turns wispy khaki tan head rests on top... aroma exhibits notes of smoked beechwood malt and a decent degree of chocolate malt giving way to a bit of cocoa to go along with the aforementioned. generally nice... flavors are a xerox copy of the aroma displaying the same characteristics of the aroma. nice smoked malt character, a bit of soft cherry and dark fruit, and more assertive cocoa flavors that all harmoniously play alongside of each other. lighter bodied with semi-prickly carbonation. lots of flavor.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
A bit dissapointing. Grainy smokey and barnyard? Tastes off to me in a strange un-jacks abby way. A rare off beer from a fantastic brewery.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Pours a rich dark brown with full creamy foamy head
Nose is roasted dark chocolate, just a hint of smokey malt
Wow what a unique taste combo. Tingly hops with a touch of smoke and a big bold chocolate/coffee flavor. Roasty and rich like a nice porter, but a lighter mouth feel. Almost could use a tiny bit more smoke, but this is one of the most thirst quenching smoked beers I've ever tasted

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
500ml bottle in a lager glass. Pours brown with a lacy, light tan head. Aroma of some dark and smoked malts, but also toasted and caramel notes and light floral hops. Flavor a nice blend of the smoked and other styles of malts. Average texture. A pretty good beer for this style.
