Cloaked in mystery, this dark black beer skirts the line between a schwarzbier and smoked porter. The use of a small percentage of traditional Beechwood smoked malt adds complexity and balances the liberal use of chocolate malt. Notes of roasted grains, beechwood smoke and coffee accompany a full bodied and sweet chocolatey malt character. Smoke & Dagger uses locally sourced ingredients. OG 14.5 Plato

500ml bottle (dated 7/12/13) pours dark brown with nice creamy finger of head. Can just barely see through the edges of the glass. Nose is roasty dark fruit, a liitle chocolate. Mouthfeel is light but held up by nice crisp carbonation and a creamy malt finish. Taste is a balanced smokiness up front which transitions into a roasty chocolate, creamy coffee, with some bits of fruit mixed in. Finish is mild fruitiness, ashy, dark cherries, a touch of smoke. This is really good.

This is sort of schwartzbier-ish, Iíd say, pushing into porter territory. The level of smoke here is significant but not overbearing. It is just a notch or two past the level where I might believe that level of smokiness can be coaxed out of regular roasted grains. It works pretty well as a compliment to chocolate and coffee flavors otherwise. Itís just a hint sweet and medium bodied. It seems fairly clean from a fermentation standpoint but itís a bit hard to tell because of all the roast/smoke. If you are into smoked porters, give this a try. It is a pretty decent spin on the style.

Where and how: bottle 12 oz
Aroma: milder in character, hinted with smoke and deep malts. Tad too fruity for such beer.
Appearance :
Top: medium plus cap, mocha, creamy with lace and rings.
Base: light brown into brown.
Palate : medium thinner body, creamy texture with delicate carbonation. Average finish.
Taste: mild smoke up font, mellow pleasant enough session able dark lager. Rauch lovers would say that this one is too mellow.
other notes I like it but this could be done better.

@ Khyber Pass. Medium brown and a bit hazy. Thin head. Light smoke, touch of acidity, bit yeasty... A muddled slightly smoky brew with toasty notes.

Draught @ As Is NYC. Inky black with spongy beige head, caramel aroma, medium carbonation, mocha taste, not really tasting smoke, thick body, medium bitter roasted malt finish. Very smooth and tasteful but did not feel smoked at all.

Pours a rich brown/black from a bottle. Nose of coffee, flavor similar with a nice roasted smokiness toward the end, some vanilla and even toffee notes mixed in a bit. Rather thin and almost cola-y. Good beer, and Iím not a particular fan of smoked beers.

Dark brown with a thin creamy head. Nose is light smoke, some bakers cocoa. Taste follows, smoke is light but there and works nicely with the chocolate and caramel malts.
